Jeep 2.7 crd engine oil change question

Does anyone know the correct torque setting for the drain plug ?
I've goggled it and no luck. Apparently it's easy to over tighten it and crack the sump, and I don't want it coming loose either.

I've used a new washer and just put a gentle 40 Nm on it for now.

Is that the Mercedes engine? I wouldn't describe 40Nm as "gentle"! I think the Merc spec (612 engine) is 30Nm.

Didn't take much effort to hit 40 !

I haven't put the oil in yet so can back it off and redo.

I'd be minded to leave it alone if it seems OK.

Yep that crossed my mind just as I backed it off. The copper washer is crushed to 40nm, so I put it back there. That's about 29 ft Ilbs.
It really took next to no effort, and is oil tight as we speak

Late to the party on this one. I did see the topic earlier but being out of the country didn't want to reply until I'd checked.

The correct torque is 47Nm.

Now, you would have known this had you checked in the service manual - you do have one don't you?

I wonder why it would be so different to the Merc figure (I guess the sumps could be different)? http://www.benzworld.org/forums/attachments/w163-m... (middle of page 4).

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that the sump was one of the few things changed on the engine.

It's easy to imagine it could be a different shape. I guess the material could possibly be different.

TBH I'm a bit un-nerved by the OP backing it off from his original setting. If it's not leaking then leave it alone!

Agree with that - if the seals been made then leave alone and just check periodically.

I must confess to formerly being a serial "copper and aluminium" sump plug washer re-user.

But Im a reformed owner now, and put a new one each oil change !

It was reading on the net of an owner who cracked his sump by over tightening the plug that made me a bit un-nerved !!
