I just found this thread again and realised I just left it without any final information. I made another topic about the Hilux I bought, what I did with it and finally what happened to it. Just if anyone is interested.

I've just returned yesterday from driving a 1000km through the sahara with work, ending up past Tantan.

You dont need a 4wd. We did it in a VW Caddy. With no air con. Oh joy. Not.

RZN185 hilux surf. I bought my 97 near perfect on eBay 2 years ago for 750(!) Before shipping out the caribbean. Based on LC 80 series chassis without the prices (or diffs and permanent 4wd dependent on model) and literally bombproof, running the same ridiculously tough 2.7 4 cylinder petrol that Toyota use in a dozen other vehicles, including hard working taxis that all hack around Africa, with huge spares availability and local repair knowledge. They are getting rarer but keep your eyes open and they are about. Better economy than the 3.0 TD as well (I've got one of each)
