The engine in the Ranger is much more pleasing than the vw, but the dash a little more plasticy, and the ride a little more bouncey, but the ranger has it for me, the engine really has character, plus all the toys and less money, and then there's the Rangers engine, did I mention that!? smile

Interesting feedback! Agree on the engine and the interior. However, in all fairness, it's a work truck of sorts, and as such, I suspect there has to be a little compromise when it comes to the interior. It felt robust enough though, never felt like parts were going to start popping off! I personally didn't think the ride was any less composed than the Amarok. I took a friends Amarok out and did 300+ miles in it too. My overall feeling was how much better the ride of the double cabs has become, especially considering they have to be able to lug 1000kg+ in the rear.

May have to try out a Ranger, been suggested by the accountant rather than stick miles on my car, what is the real world economy of the 3.2 auto?

3.2 Auto with my drive to work - 0.5 miles town, 6 miles motorway, 1.2 miles stop start was 29.8mpg. And im a 80 leptons man, and not gentle.

I took a gentle cruise for about 20 miles, on an A road, and got it to 34mpg. So i think it depends how you drive. They settle in bettle for efficiency about 4-5k in

thats bareable, will ask at local dealer for a drive, meant to be a decent discount with BASC membership

If you were to stick it at 60mph on cruise, im sure you would see late 40's, its getting the thing moving that kills the MPG, its not exactly lightweight.

But the 5 pot engine is well and truely proven (I used to have one in my Ltd LWB Transit) and I sold it on a 179k still running beautifully, having been rather abused.

You won't see late 30's Lou, let alone anything starting with a 4.

Most owners average late 20's, some manage low 30's, a dead flat 60mph cruise might yield 35mpg, the 0.42 drag coefficient and 2.2 ton weight see to that.

Still good though, in the not too distant past these things averaged less than 20mpg.

I hit the wrong key, wasnt concentrating. Late 30's was meant. I managed to crawl our 2.2 Manual that NormalBloke drove to 41mpg over 28 miles, that was tedious!

FWIW, our firm, after using half a dozen Isuzu Denvers' over 10+ years years, now has 2 Ranger Limited, auto's (4 cyl 2.2l). I've run the first for 17k miles in 6 months, never having driven a truck before. Interior is a decent place to be, quick clear screen, nav (ok not brilliant), heated leather seats, elec driver seat, bluetooth, cool box in armrest & reversing camera. Decent stereo but no DAB (a £200 ford dealer fit though I think) Longest day was 540 miles & I was frazzled, but pain free. Average 26/27mpg, mainly M & A roads (per OBC not checked). My colleague who ran 2 of the Isuzu's thinks the ford is slower & the interior "feels" less solid. We looked at Amarok's but there was a significant price difference to get a similar spec. Have had a few random electricals (heated seat not switching off, wipers staying on full speed) just needed a re-boot...stop, turn off engine, count to 20, re start, problem solved. Company next door has an Amarok. Not driven it, but interior looks higher quality, although this could be because VW use solid black plastics but the ford is mixed greys - they "look" flimsier. Possibly the same compared to the Denver. Overall, I'm a fan & everyone who's been in is surprised how good it is. Wife also really enjoys driving it (she has a VW Up). My biggest client has a new RR Sport Autobiography & after our 540mile trip was really impressed. It's not treated as a serious load lugger though: more a company vehicle that suits our industry/image (& tax bill?) better than a BMW/VW/Audi. At 70 - 75 on the m-way it's relaxing, at anything significantly higher, its still a smooth ride, but loud enough for me to need to be late for something important to justify "pressing on". Hope that helps.

Nice to hear a great review of a product I sell, thanks buddy! I think we have got it spot on with price and spec wise. The Amarok is more costly, and I worry about that small Bi Tdi lump, but it could be a winner over time. Although I know NormalBloke above isnt a big fan of the VW lumps after some bad experiences

Good review above, your quoted MPG backs what others have said about the Ranger's 2.2 motor being no more economical than the 3.2. I wonder if your 540 mile journey would have been more relaxing if you were running the Rangers lovely 5 pot motor?

I had a gentle 50 mile country/town run a couple of days ago in my Amarok, 60mph open road mixed with very light town traffic and the normally accurate OBC showed 43mpg, best I've ever seen.

Cheddar, fair point. Didn't think about making a case for 5-cyl nvh/driver comfort gains. We reckoned the 5-cyl (wildtrak only?) would be too big a step up to lease and fuel. Shame if one of those assumptions turns out to be wrong, but hindsight etc...Could have looked harder maybe, but I really couldn't find much in the way of UK long term feedback 6 months ago. Good info though: will make a note to lobby harder for the 5-cyl next time, ta!

You can have the 5cyl 3.2 in a Limited too. Its not wildtrack only which is a bonus

Just remember if you are going for the Ranger it's due a facelift this year.

http://www.carscoops.com/2015/02/2015-ford-ranger-...

I'm considering either of these at the moment, test drove the Amarok and felt it was a little undertorqued, if that's a word?

I might hold off until I see a new Ranger's interior.
