Compared to similar age Shoguns or early X Trails I can't help thinking that this left-field option looks like a lot of fun.

It's got to tow 1.6 tons of ponytrailer about 25 miles a week, and it must break down, need a new gearbox or be difficult for a wife to drive and manoeuvre. Do you reckon this is a reasonable choice?

Are they all low-tech never goes wrong and easy to fix lazy V8 workhorses? Or are they more unpopular under engineered petrol guzzlers that nobody can ever get parts for?


Your thoughts gentlemen...

Loved mine, V8 Off road sorted as well, with rough country lift and muds.

Towed 3.5t all day long not issues at all both horse trailer / caravan and another jeep on a trailer the 3.5t load.

It did drop a valve seat, but hey ho wasn't the end of the world. Had it 3yrs and loved every minute of owning it. Mine was LPG so wasn't to bad.

Went to south of France a few times, Only sold it to buy a 2007 Grand Cherokee WK.

Thanks. That's ecouraging. What model is this - they seem to be called two letters denoting models....

Did you find insurance a problem with modified suspension?

Well I've had a 2001 model for about a year and a half now and the only spares it's needed have been relatively cheap. Not sure the 4.0 litre is a V8 though, I think you'll find it's a straight 6, the V8's are all 4.7 litres.

Also I'd say strong money for that age, even with a lift. My 2001 cost me £1200. As you say fuel consumption isn't anything to write home about, on long runs it's great but pottering around the countryside it's high teens very low 20's if I'm lucky.

We have a 2003 Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0.

It's a tough car with real off-road ability. Fairly simple and easy to fix, although parts can be expensive.

Quite old-fashioned, but has lots of charm. Very thirsty, expect 16-18mpg.

Yes, the 4.0 is an inline 6. Tough as old boots and surprisingly smooth and refined.

I'd have that before an Xtrail every time.

looks great the straight six in that will probably be tough and reliable - its not highly stressed.

Tidy, no tow bar either which is a plus when buying. Straight 6 is very reliable, top end of the price IMHO, need to try and get them down a bit

Aha, I see. Yep an I6 makes sense - I just saw that every other petrol GC of that era seemed to have a V8 and assumed.

Having now searched a few more Jeeps for sale I agree it's top money. It's got half the miles of most but then only partial service history. It's modified. It can't tow without a £400 tow bar fitting. Basically it's a pretty difficult car to sell I would imagine.

If I go and take a look it will be with my farmers bargain mode engaged.

Tomorrow my old man is bringing me his neighbours 2000 TD5 Discovery to look at. Apparently cherished and low mileage they will take £3,500 for it as a sort of favour. Please tell me I would be mad to buy this era and model of Disco2. I believe it was from the darkest days of the dark days of Landrover quality control.

Or is it all exaggerated?

That Jeep is a bit overpriced I would say but nice vehicle all the same. Im rather envious of the fuel consumption figures being quoted, I had a 1999 4.0 Grand Cherokee, on a decent run about 20mpg around town which was its main use 4-5mpg thats why I no longer have it.

Far too much money, I'd guess at £2500 tops & I suspect less than that. I bought my WJ 4L 4 years ago at 82K for £2300. Genuine 2 owner car as well. I love it, it is now on 130K serviced by local Jeep indie. I get 17.4MPG overall it will manage near 20 on a run & around low teens around town.
They need decent servicing every 7.5K axle & transfer box oil changes & auto box fluid & filter at 30K & 90K respectively are important.
Mine has had various bits, new front callipers because it missed the recall, rear exhaust, both rear axle oil seals, radiator, stat, battery. But you'd expect most of this at 100Kish anyway.
Parts aren't too expensive odd bits are but they are available s/h &/or from the US.

The Shogun sold before I could see it!

The Sept 2001 Disco2 now poses me a conundrum. It's the facelift midel with the 700 improvements with a TD5 seven seats and the air suspension replaced with coils on 110,000 miles for £3,500.

It's been well serviced and runs reasonably well.

My Dad is keen for me to buy it but I can't stop worrying that I would be as mad as Mad Jack McMad to do so. A major priority is for me not to have maintenance and repair hassles with this third vehicle...

So many options. Sports cars are so much simpler!

I actually got 23mpg out of ours on a motorway run once!

Try both. I found the Jeep woefully cramped inside compared to a Disco.

Picking my WJ up to morrow, after having £800 £1100 brake overhaul - new discs on rear, pads (incl handbrake ones)all round and new rear calipers (old ones seized snapping hand brake cable on the mot).... and new rear wheel bearings, gear box and diff oil change.....

and yep can confirm as others say high teens for mpg.

Bought mine for £1500 in the summer, looked in good nick, new belts, new shocks, rake of history...... just goes to show

Now on aftermarket 17" on AT General Grabber tyres to same rolling radius as OEM......... now waiting for the late late snow, and floods to happen hehe

Ohhh almost forgot, a new exhaust as well ...... and a window regulator as the cable snapped, and a replacement rear wiper motor as old one was seized ....... money pit YES, fun exceeds the outlay (compared to my TVR)

Hmm. I keep running across stories about people needing to spend big money to keep old four by fours on the road.

I'm not so sure it's going to be a better (thiree cars) strategy than just buying a modern vehicle that does everything. A four year old Kia Sorrento Auto for £13k appears to give me seven seats, 40mpg, a warranty, 0-60 in sub ten seconds and will happily tow an Ifor Willaims out of a pony club meet field on a wet day.

Boring but rational.

Well drove the WJ up & stayed the night at Mum's house for our Birthday on the Norfolk/Cambridge Border (Outwell nr Wisbech) last night. Woke up this morning & moved the Jeep to get some bits out of the back & it sounded like an F1 car! The Cat fairies had visited during the night & nicked the Cat
Turns out they were seen around 1/4mile away earlier but got disturbed. Obviously decided to target mine. So apparently a tall guy dark hoody in an early Escort estate, with someone else. If anyone sees the scrote kick him in the nuts for me. Kudos to Norfolk Police SOCO & Police out within 90 minutes. Jeep now at local garage being fixed & as it will be due soon MOT'd

Swines. My cars are in a large outbuilding. My Dobermans live in the same building. If ever the cat fairies call on me they're going to need all nine lives in order to leave.

Having a roll of plastic sheeting, an old mini digger and two bags of lime stashed away just in case the dogs go postal may be too much of a precaution. But hey.
