Yes quite. But your average £3k 300TDi will be a safer bet than a £3k Td5. I was looking for a mate in the last couple of weeks.

Couldn't see many TD5's below £4k.

He's just paid £3750 for a 200k mile TD5 with not a scrap of service history and in quite scruffy condition, needs several new panels to get straight. It was the cheapest TD5 around.

I have seen half-decent D2 TD5s go for c£3k but they've always been sold through owners clubs. - Most of the stuff you'll see on a forecourt / normal private sale at that price will need the same again (or more) spending on it.

Considering the OP's requirements and budget, I'd personally go for a 300TDi Discovery. - That budget would buy one of the best examples; a Defender at that price will probably be twice as much of a money pit!
