I quite fancy a diesel Grand Cherokee, which appear very good value for money.
A budget of up to £6k will get me either a good late model WJ or an early WK model but which is best?

Assume you mean late WJ which has the 5cyl engine

I only have the v8 which is great but thirsty.

Derv WJ's seem to have some issues with 5th injector access for changing (under bulkhead) and some gearbox woes - nothing too bad.

Some of the others on here will be along in a minute with real experience of them.

Thought so - the 5cy is supposed to be very reliable and around 7-10mpg better than mine.
Mine does 19 in town and 22-23MPG on a run.

Plenty around with high mileages so they should be fine.

I think I saw a thread on here about someone saying the 3.0v6 wasn't as economical towing - but that could be my memory playing up....

Both diseasals are Mercedes, It is injector 4 & 5 that are difficult. Needs to be done by someone who knows what they are doing as it is possible to trash the head otherwise. The gearbox is a Merc box, not as reliable as the Chrysler box which is bombproof but not bad. Need fluids changed regularly but otherwise pretty reliable.

Might be a bit late now but have you considered a 4.0 with LPG? I'm getting around 15-18 mpg at half the price of petrol so equivalent of 30-36. Don't think the diesel could beat those figures...

I'm still looking.
I haven't dismissed the 4 litre LPG, but, I don't know enough about LPG to make an informed decision. I'll be using it to occasionally tow a boat and the fact that the diesel engine has more torque than the petrol is tempting me more in that direction.

I can assure you neither of them will have trouble pulling a boat (or much else for that matter!) around. Although I haven't towed with it there's no doubting the low down grunt it has on or off road.

Main thing with LPG is if you've got a station local to you. I've got two in the town where I work, one two minutes detour at the morrisons I sometimes shop in. It's properly handy for me. I don't do many miles and bought a 99 one with 140k miles on it, iirc the conversion was done 100k ago but still works fine. For me it's not a huge deal if there's issues with it as long as it still runs on petrol so I gambled. Was really nothing to worry about so far! When it runs out of LPG I notice the extra power from petrol but it's got mud tyres and commutes via half Singletrack road and half B road so performance is a non issue

4litre WJ on LPG, as late as you can get. Mine does around 18mpg on gas, and paying 45p a litre at the mo. I am looking for another one to put away for when mine finally dies (at 245k miles and the mo and still running fine)
WKs don't feel as well built as WJs

My WJ is making an odd noise from the rear..... had look about and decided to fix it as it is in better nick then those for sale and it's only done 85k.....

may have a doner vehicle for nothing as well/// happy days smile

Mine is with Terry at A1 Chrysler for exactly this reason, knackered anti roll bar links cos they craply made (man with hammers in boot when going round rh corners) & diff bearings, continuous chow-wow-wow when warm.

Are there any particular LPG kits to avoid or any that are better than others?

I keep hearing mention of Flashlube. Is that only necessary on the V8 motors?

I would go for the WK myself, by all accounts it is a big step up from the WJ. I have owned a Commander (same platform as the WK) and I thought it was very good, the diesel one I tried was also remarkably good for a diesel.

Mine has a Prins system that's done 100k before I bought it. Can't offer any more as it's my first LPG and maybe just lucked out!

Just to conclude the thread and disappoint you Jeep lovers. I've just bagged myself a very tidy '04 Mitsubishi Shogun SWB and much to my surprise, I actually like it a lot.

WJ is the best off road, go for the V8, the diesels are the most problematic as they don't sell them in the US.

Good call in my eyes, Do like the shoguns - 04 plate lasts of the rear locking diff models or fist with traction control ?
