Op-

This is what I bought after a few too many whilst looking through eBay.

Things to bare in mind:

I live in London where there are no hills or green lanes

I had to drive it (broken) 400 miles from Rochdale.

It's done less than 100 miles in the year I've owned it

But...

It's £120 to insure

Everyone loves it

It's great fun to drive

I've boarded out the whole rear so the dog can go for trips without ruining my M3.

As an only car - not in a million years.

As something to mess about with occasionally - it's great.

Can I ask where you insured it with, how old you are, and whether you limited the mileage on your policy? Did you have the same problems as Ive had trying to get a reasonable cost 2nd car policy? £120 is what I was expecting - £500 to £3k+ is what I'm getting quoted.

It's through Keith michaels.

Specialist policy as the truck is so heavily modified.

2000 mile limit per year.

I'm 34.

No need for any proof of NCB either.

This is why I'm so surprised see. I'm 35, full no claims, never had a accident, clean license held for 18 years. Looking for exactly the same type of policy as you have. I only want a bit of a weekend hobby.

If not wanting a daily driver, you might also consider the Nissan Terrano and Daihatsu Fourtrak. Rust is an ever-present menace, but both are quite capable in an old-school sort of way.

Bloody hell.

I'm only 30 although my insurance has stayed a consistent £380 for the jeep (including no claims) and I only pay £80 a year through Lancaster on my defender V8

Perhaps a classic Land Rover might be more up your street?

Another 3 companies tried no luck. NFU wont quote me because apparantly i live in a high claims area and they have strict criteria. Ive never had any problems having lived there for 5 years. Hodgson insurance came back at 3k saying car not old enough and they are unable to mirror the NCD on that car. Still to get through to keith micheals and will try sureterm. If i dont get anywhere with those thats the dream over.

How old is the car?

There are loads of nicely modified off roaders on eBay for under £5k

Buy an older one?

Mines 18 now and it's spot on.

Try 2gether insurance http://2getherinsurance.co.uk/ We use this for TJ Wrangler and it is £250 pa for 3000 miles inc. all mods and offroad use. Didn't need NCB either.

We use Adrian Flux for the other that is £350 mirrored NCB off another policy 5000 miles all mods and offroad use.

Gratuitous photo op smile

Bought both off eBay too.

I know the OP is being persuaded along the lines of buying a main car and a 'toy' offroader it may be worth still considering just buying the one 4x4 to start as an all duty car...you can do light offroading with destroying it or drowning it and then if you think you're interested in doing this as a more regular hobby buy a toy to follow. There's still some options if the OP wanted a single vehicle for family duties and fun. This was an offroad session we did last year...the driver in front was using their everyday Grand Cherokee and it handled pretty much everything that the more modded Jeeps did as well and a Grand Cherokee is a perfectly civilised family car.

If i had a short commute i would probably buy one as a main car, but i have a daily 40 mile motorway commute, each way. I think id quickly tire of it in that situation. Have got no further with quotes, and the jeep i was looking at is about to sell on ebay so back to the drawingboard.

i got my renewal through this morning - its gone up a bit but still not expensive. turns out its actually insured through LV - which i thought was odd.

I was furious when the renewal quote on my Series 3 came through at £78 last year. After lots of negotiation, I got it down to £72 for fully comp on a 5k mile restriction. biggrin
