After 11 years I think we are finally going to sell out trusty mazda bongo as it's going to need wheelarches replaced plus there's a bit of rust on the front of the subframe and now we have less dogs we just don't use it much.
Obviously owning the bongo were not scared of low mpg but we had a 4.0 grand Cherokee and that was to low even compared to the bongo.
We'd like auto and for it to be comfy and cheap £3000 max, so after a look online the contenders are :
xtrail 2.2dci , freelander td4 or a Volvo xc70 d5 would also consider the xtail petrol as it returns pretty good mpg.
I also like the merc ml looking at the mpg's it pretty similar to what our bongo does now 29 compared to the bongos 25mpg.

That's a hard choice I would think, as you haven't picked much that's good to start off with. (No opinion on the Volvo)
I have driven the X-trail 2.2 diesel, and I hated that. And the ones I saw had lots of trouble with the injectors and things.
I'd completely avoid avoid avoid the German stuff,unless you have a very good repair budget. Electrical gremlins will not be pleasant. (I've thought and looked at one of these as a replacement for our 4*4)
Surprisingly, I did drive a 55 plate Cr-v 2.0 Auto on a 55 plate the other day. 168kmiles, and was as smooth as you like. Lovely lovely car, and one that I would have bought.
I've also has a Rav 4 - and I like those a lot too.

Both wheel arches need cutting out and replacing there was a advisory on the mot for corrosion on the front subframe which needs looking at , and we just don't need it anymore as we used to have 3 dogs now we have 1.However I've priced up the wheel arches and I can get them sorted for £600 so maybe it's worth spending out on it as we know it's spot on mechanically and it's never broken down , I could spend 3k on something else and end up with a money pit.

I know you said no diesel but....... my Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 2.7 CRD (the same engine as the Merc ML) is currently for sale in the adds, Its been a fantastic car for me for the last 4 years, fully stamped up service history etc etc only £250 over your budget......

Goes in next month to have rear wheel arches replaced and wax oiled.
