Anyone here with experience of the 80-series Landcruiser with the 4.2 non-turbo diesel lump? There is one selling locally at a decent price, half tempted but I can't help thinking it would be frustratingly slow... am I right?

Yes its a 1 hz engine I think, its got a different ( indirect injection ) head to the turbo diesel very reliable but not that powerful....
think turbo kits are avalible or you could put a second hand factory td engine in it and sell your old engine as its the same as in a 75 series ...

Cheers. Might take it for a test drive if its still for sale after Christmas but I suspect it will be a bit too slow for my taste.

Wasn't really planning to buy a 4wd just now, just happened to drive past and it looked a good deal and got me thinking. hehe

I had a turbo 80 series, I really wouldn't have wanted a non turbo- will be exceedingly slow and underpowered.

also might be worth checking if its an import as I though all uk cars were turbo VXs/Amazons (I could be totally wrong on this point though)

Its NZ-new wink - there were both NA and turbo versions sold here in various specs. Think I'll give this one a miss though - its manual which I like, but as well as being NA it doesn't have the full difflocks either just the centre.

That must be an import which also throws up insurance issues. I'd give it a miss myself, I've owned two turbo 80s and I can only imagine they would be very slow and unpleasant to drive without the turbo. Of course it is possible to fit an aftermarket turbo kit to the NA diesel but it would surely be a better plan just to spend a bit more on a decent UK turbo diesel.

Maybe I should clarify, I'm in NZ.

On a side note, it always seems funny to me that whether a car is imported new or second hand makes a difference to your insurance in the UK - the majority of cars here in NZ are Japanese imports and it makes no difference at all to our insurance. Insurers don't even ask where the car came from, just what it is.

But yes, all opinions seem to suggest that the non-turbo ones accelerate about as quickly as a glacier so I don't think I'll bother with it.

We had a load of second hand imports in the late 90s which really upset the official importers
they previously were telling people how wonderfull there cars were while selling what in japan was a base model
at premium prices so we had pajeros they called them shoguns and you had to pay extra for things like air con
then the grey imports came with all the toys so, the official boys threw their toys out of the pram and started placing adverts
saying these inports weren't safe and had lower safety standards which was fine until it got back to the japaness who then got upset at the british importers saying there domestic market cars were inferior ...
there was a lot of misinformation going about and sadly some of it was excepted as fact by the insurance industry
over here there are some ins companys who happy insure and some who won't , I've never had a problem but you do need to know who to ask for a quote...

they really arent that bad in my opinion as long as you keep in mind the age and weight of the thing. great plodders and loveable truck.

I have an 80 TD, its had a hard life but starts every morning and goes to work, if its cheap I'd buy it purely as an investment, they aren't dropping in money
