My bloody ML has just been taken away on a low loader with windscreen wipers going, Windows dropped, lights blinking.

Do you chaps think an unlimited could be a solid family car?

I really want a simple, reliable SUV without all the modern unnecessary complications.

It's ridiculous. My 1989 Mercedes is amazing. Modern cars are crap.

As long as the ultimate can do motorways - surely it's more refined than our other car which is a Skoda fabia 2005.

I just want an extremely reliable family car. The fact I can use it for mild off-road (Norfolk shooting) is a bonus.

The interior looks perfect for kids who scuff up everything.

Perfect for trips to the tip etc. which is what our car does.

I suspect very similar electronics hide beneath them, as much as I like the look of them and given the money I'd probably buy one.

I had a budget of £6k at the beginning of the year and have wanted a '4x4' for a while as it suits my current needs, I spent months before I had the funds looking at all sorts of shiney things and had my heart set on a range rover for a while but eventually I let my professional brain take control and bought the best condition, latest non common rail Landcruiser Colorado I could find.

She's a peach, sure it doesn't go round corners like the newer stuff and is getting on for 15 years old but it does everything I want in comfort and in the back of my mind I know it is going to start and get me where I want to go every time.

I make money fixing other people's cars, I don't make any fixing my own !

We've owned a 2007 2.8CRD Unlimited (4 door) for about a year now. It had ~63K on the clock, we're at around 70K. We paid £11.5 for it.

We love it. It's been modified a bit which helps with the ride. You can't get away from it being a bit agricultural but it's not so bad. We've had it mildly remapped which makes it much more driveable. It's reasonably practical. We took the family camping in France last year for a couple of weeks and managed to fit everything into the boot with a squeeze. You can't easily fit roof racks since the hardtop is removable so a pain if you want to put a roof box on.

We tend to use it when we need to take the family and 'stuff' so gets pretty regular use.

We have it on a modified policy with Adrian Flux at 7500 miles PA and it's less than £300 pa to insure with agreed valuation.

The body mods were all already done on ours when we purchased it. We like them. Although I'm sure not to everyone's taste. It's not really a vehicle that blends into the background. We don't use it for serious offroading...we've got a TJ for that...we're in a club and so far not seen anything that the longer wheel based Unlimited's haven't been able to tackle versus the shorter wheel based vehicles if you did want to take it off road.

To the OP I would recommend having a look. Don't expect the refinement of a German SUV but on the flip side they're not 'that' complex either so shouldn't cause too many financial surprises.

Also they also do seem to have plateaued at around the £10K-£11K mark and will only depreciate gradually with use/mileage etc.

I Tell you what is bonkers.
I had a Sahara full loaded purchased in 09 from the main dealers, 4 months old, 4k miles. COST 14.5K at the time of the Fiat taker over they were new for 17kish.
I sold it for more money and the guy I sold it to had if for 2 years and sold what he paid for it from.
Infact of all cars you can't imagine how little they have dropped since the sale of the early cars. Yes the new one's are twice as much.
And old JK 4.0 have gone bonkers...you could not give them away and now a good one is 10k

I really like jeeps but what pisses me off is that in the UK they start at 30k but in the US they start at $23k. I think they would be way more popular if they priced alot lower starting around the 23k GBP mark.

I purchased bog version of the Nitro...with decent profile tyres...similar running gear in places....no scuicide rear door and not as wide......Best bit its for Buttons from a maindealer with very low miles mint 3 years ago under 7k, its been tiptop and done 30k since...bargain...the Jeep Cherokee of the same years is basically the same vehicle.
Read the owners reviews on the autrader.

I have driven the 2.8 manual and auto over here and the bigger petrol engined manual in Greece.

Love them. Almost bought a 3 year old one in 2012 for about 16k from a dealer for use as a fun family car and camping hols etc but decided to wait a year and get one cheaper.

Big mistake.

Damn you all biggrin

Been looking today. A few 2009 Saharas and Sports still asking for £15k to £16k. Isn't that what they were going for back in 2009 new.

What happened to any new car is worth half it's value in 3 years.

I've been waiting patiently too, to much the same result. Cheapest I've seen a JK is about £11k for an early one.

Completely crazy!!!

I keep one in Arizona for offloading and general transport of dogs etc. Rear seats are very uncomfortable for long distances, roadholding is vague, acceleration is relaxed, fuel consumption on the 6 cyl is nothing special, headlights are dim, been through four windshields in four years ( stone chips).

I love it. Brilliant off-road, fits the landscape and is completely different to any of my other cars.
