What Proper 4x4 for mud/snow/ICE?
Discussion
My dad drives a 15 year old Freelander. He's had it since new, and apart from some age related little niggles, like the window motor regulator failing, its been a good runner.
He and his partner likes to think of themselves as "country folk" now, ie the car gets MOT and basic service every year but never see's a bucket of water, and never gets hovered out either !!

I'm after a 5 door 4x4 that can handle some decent snow and ice as our new house is out in the sticks with some very steep roads that will not see any Salt or snowploughs in the winter.
I Like the Discovery 2 but the wife thinks it's a bit big, so what options do I have?
It should be Manual, diesel, 5 door and a decent boot.
But the main thing again is not a soft roader, does a smaller decent 4wd car exist?
Buget is about £3,500
Thanks
I lived for twenty odd years in a hamlet at 650 ' on the North York Moors; single track road and up to 1 in 4 .Never snow ploughed, let alone gritted . In sundry Golfs, 306s , 205s and the like the only time I got stuck was before I bought winter tyres. To prove a point I once drive up a 1 in 3 in an AX GT in 5"+ of snow- no problem. 4x4s are great for ground clearance , deep mud and rutted tracks (and pretending you are Bear Grylls ) but any FWD hatch will get you home with the right rubber. i echo your thoughts entirely. NYM 10x anything Devon gets, i'd actually concede to a soft roader if i were you though! Gassing Station | Off Road | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
