I bought a 2001 Jeep Cherokee a few weeks ago primarily as a family truck/load lugger/get to work in the snow car. Always liked these classic Cherokees and I havn't been disapointed. What a cracker - its amazing. Looks great, drives well on-road and it was stunning in the snow a few weeks ago. Had it checked over last week by Surrey off-road in Dunsfold and they recon I've got a really sweet one. They also recon that apart from a few with leaky diffs and weak rads, these cars go on for ever and ever. I've got heated electric leather seats, a 4.0 straight 6, auto box with low range and locking centre diff, air-con etc etc etc. I've been driving it every day, the Porsche hasn't moved since the Jeep arrived!!!
This car is a real-world bargain. And to think a few years ago I spent over £50k on an X5 that lost more in value in 2 weeks than the Cherokk is worth...!

I did pay top dollar though - £3500 but it only has 67000 on the clock a fsh and is really tidy. I looked at a few for £2k but they were pretty shabby and as I always end up uprating my cars, I thought it wise to find the tidiest platform to start with.
Next step is Old man EMU suspension, with a new cat-back exhaust, airfilter and engine chip. Will release a couple more ponies but more importantly will allow me to better enjoy the 4.0 staight 6!!!
Forgot to mention another great thing about this car - in 2wd mode it's a RWD, and with a slippy-diff and all terrain tyres its the easiest car I've ever owned to drift. You can get the tail out at about 15mph!!!

I was looking around for a real snotter of a 4x4. Something that could be put to hard work when required, get dirty, get scratched by bushes on narrow lanes etc. Everyone was asking big money for Land Rovers and Landcruisers, plus me wife would not wish to drive anything huge. I looked at the full spectrum of cars and more or less overlooked the Cherokee as I had always thought it, well, a bit fugly. Long story short, I did some reading and searching and then found a beaut on Ebay. Went and had a look and it was a bit dirty, but could see a very tidy car underneath.
This weekend, I have given the car 'a bit of a clean', but oh dear! I have not ended up with a snotter, but a minter. Honestly, this things looks so nice and has come up so well, it could (genuinely) be flippin concours material. Problem now is that she is too good to get scratched up and abused - I love her too much. It does kind of defeat the purpose in getting her, but I did go snow roading in 2 feet of the stuff the day she arrived. Amazing! As soon as the sun shows, I will take some pics and get them posted up. I think I got a cracking bargain for £6.5K for an '06 with 11,000 miles. She also looks the business!! Its a car with character and the 3.7L V6 is very sweet and sounds like music to me. I am a happy chap!

I bought my 1999 Cherokee 4.0 Orvis 6 months ago and love it too. It was a one owner car with 70,000 miles and sevviced every 3,500! Since I bought it nothing at all has gone wrong and it feels like it will go on for ever.
It's so comfortable, has loads of toys and is even quite rapid. I can't recommend these cars highly enough. They're absolute bargains.

I had a Cherokee 4.0ho in black with cream leather & momo steering wheel.
Interior was a little cramped IIRC & I needed a spare wheel carrier.
I absolutely loved it though.
Especially when we went green laning- it pulled an inpressive powerslide 3up at 50mph.
Also when the tread on the rear tyres started to get down to around 2-3mm the handling would become very interesting on roundabouts

I hear they don't swim well.....I've got a ZJ Grand Cherokee 1995, with the 4.0 I6 and it's a brilliant car. Mine has done 365k!
The fuel pumps tend to go on them though, at least where I live in the Caribbean, but that's probably down to the quality of the fuel. I've had to do 4 fuel pumps on various 4.0 Jeeps over the past year.

thing is i love land rovers and make all the jokes etc about Jeeps, but at the end of the day, they like land rover and the higher end jap boxes, despite all the luxury gubbins have not compromised their off road prowess and their get you home ability, i once drove from Norwich to Southend with a failed clutch master cylinder in my discovery, but she got me home (gingerly ) and most of the Jeeps will do the same.
i would like to see an x5 take the same grief have something fail and then still get you home.
good choice, if it had been my money it would have a different badge, but i have been told in the past that the 6 cyl engine runs on squashed mosquitoes if need be
