I'm looking at buying a HiLux Surf but I'm a bit confused over the model numbers and specs. Can anybody help?

What is the difference between a SSR V and a SSR X ?
They're both the same age and 3.0 engines, it looks like the interiors are different but is there anything else?

Also, any recommendations or horror stories would be useful.

had a 3.0TD was a great lump. dont touch the 2.4 word is they eat head gaskets at an alarming rate and require a new cylinder head. im afraid thats all i have to offer as i dont understand the spec of the ruddy things either!

Agree, had both a 2.4 and a 3.0.

Both great trucks, but the 3.0 was just soooooo good, fantastic engine, even better with the intercooler.

Buy one, you will not regret.

Bought one today, ended up getting a SSR G. Not seen a "G" before but it's got Recaro interior. Checked all of the electrics and gearbox settings, all seems to work well.

From Monday 1 March I will be a fully fledged 4x4 owner/driver!!

Is it an auto? I have a Land Cruiser with the 3.0td and auto, it's a fantastic car but fuel consumption is dire.

Think my 3.0 one was a ssr-g. isnt that the one with the mirror that comes out of rear spoiler.

Didn't notice that! Not sure if it's on mine, maybe an option?

As for fuel consumption, not sure what people think is dire/acceptable/good. As far as I'm concerned, the truck weighs nearly 2 tonnes so anywhere approaching 30mpg is good in my book.

I get between 19 and 24ish out of mine and it doesn't seem to make any difference how I drive it, my Discovery does 30mpg on a good day and that's heavier although not an auto.
I think 19mpg is a good trade off for not having to drive a Land Rover though.

I'll be honest, was hoping for a bit more than that!

Will have to wait and see, like you said though, not a bad trade off!

You mention fitting an intercooler, was it fitted when you bought the car? Any recommendations on a supplier/fitter?

again, intercooler models are all gen 3. although you can fit an intercooler to a gen 2 usual thing to do seems to be a bonnet scoop off a trooper, and cooler sourced from a mitsubishi shogun.
i believe a body lift of 2" is needed to accomodate the cooler...

another point worth mentioning in favour of the gen 3 is u can drive it in 4wd at all times if u want to, as it has a centre diff, gen 2 surfs do not and can only be put in 4wd on mud snow ect.
gen 3 models are built on landcruiser chassis (if that makes any difference to u)

there is a dedicated site/forum for hilux surfs www.hiluxsurf.co.uk
