Hi learned people,

Have just aquired a 03 discovery 2 automatic which has a wierd fault.

Start up engine, select any gear nothing happens, wait with engine running perhaps 10-15 mins or less sometimes, gear engages and off we go.

Gears change up and down ok and box is smooth and not noisey in any way, this problem does not occur everytime you start the vehicle.

Tried all of the usuall things, select all optional gears inc sport and low/high range,
to no avail, turn engine off and on (works sometimes)has had new xyz switch fitted.

Garage is telling me it needs a new box, but i think it aint broke and its a electrical problem, vehicle has only done 63 thousand miles !

i can't help directly, and people on here are very knowledgeable, but i would join a couple of land rover specific forums and post for help there. you will almost certainly come across someone who has had the same problem or has fixed it for someone.

the only thing i can think of is make sure the right oil is in there as it may be that it is too thick for stuff to move at first.

mind i am no expert.

From the FAQ on Ashcroft's site:

When I start my Automatic Range Rover in the mornings it takes a while to engage drive, it has not always done this. This has become worse in the cold weather. Why?

It sounds like you need to change the filter! In the cold weather, i.e when the oil is cold and more viscous, if the filter is partially blocked it will take some time for the pump to draw oil through it. Once the oil becomes warm it flows more freely and can pass through the filter more easily. Hence the problem only occurs when the oil is cold. To remedy this problem your filter needs to be changed. This should be done sooner rather later to reduce the possibility of damage to the autobox, by the clutches "slipping" during this slow engagement.
