Starigrad to Cherbourg -- Recommended Routes

Hi all,
My Dad and Uncle are currently in Starigard and are working their back to Cherbourg.
They are leaving Starigard on Saturday 22nd May and need to be in Cherbourg 25th on Tuesday 25th for 4PM to get ther ferry back to Ireland.
They are driving a Landrover Defender 110.
The route down they took was Calais, Reims, Stutgard, Munich, Llubjana
Anyone got a few routes they can suggest please ? Looking for a different route to the outbound route
Some interesting / challenging places would be nice
