Supposed to have been announced at the Autosport show that there's going to be a Pinin Challenge off road cross country rally series for these but I can't find any info or a Web sites.

I'm really really tempted by one of these for around the £1000 mark - about year 2000 with just below 100,000 miles.

Can you give any indication on their reliability, after owning one for a while? What are they like?

On my short list is Daihatsu Terios, Nissan Terrano, Mitsu Shogun Pinin and Suzy Jimny.

(Do you want to sell yours!?)
My brother had a Pinin. Decent enough offroad, but limited tyre wise, due to front spring cup directly above the tyre. Had various issues. I would go for any of the others over a Pinin if I am honest.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately (for who, I am not so sure) I have already put a deposit down on one - 2001 1.8 (gasp) GDI Attivo. Fingers crossed....

His was the 1.8 GDI.

Good on snow and ice

Decent on hilly inclines

As well as descents...

And was decent on mud.

Awesome pics, I've bought mine exactly for that; snow, ice and mud! Let's hope the engine stays 'de-coked' and it doesn't rot!

Any advice you could pass on to me, other than don't get one??!! laugh

Well, it wasn't so much don't get one, more that if you ever fancy lifting it a tad, and putting some agressive MT's on there, you are a bit buggered. On top of the ECU HP Fuel pump issue, it has put me off them, at least.

Comfy enough to drive though. The standard under-body 'protection' is nothing of the sort. He fitted an aftermarket one fitted;

The bullbar was a regret, as it was utterly pointless.

Anyway, we went all over in out little 'softroaders' and had no issues.

I don't wanna/don't need to lift it or really put anything other than M+S road-orientated tyres on it so should be okay.

I've read a bit about the fuel pump being a bugger. I figured at 100,000 miles *most* of the problems should have already reared their heads?! Did your brother suffer with the coking and fuel pump issues?

His does look very smart, can't wait to get mine. I guess I'll be looking at sump guards. When my Dad when to have a look at it for me and put the deposit on it he said there was some rust/corrosion at the bottom of the engine bay. I can only assume that this is the sump guard or an after market skidpan thing that has just seen better days... time will tell.

Cheers for any more advice if you've got any!!

I bought a 04 1.8 mpi model. Been a great little run around in all the snow. Even had it in a few fields on its road tyres and its chugged along.

Just a little heads up, I MOT'd a Pinin today, an 02 plate petrol with 90k on it.

It was finished frown the strut top mounting area was rotted away to the point the inner wing was flexing when the brakes were applied in the rollers yikes, this was both sides, the rear cross member was rotten, the rear suspension pick up points were holed and the same went for the outer sills.

This car looks 100% on top and a would be buyer with little idea would snap it up.

Excellent thanks for that advice. I'm going to look at it tomorrow so this advice arrived in time. Is it just a case of looking under the bonnet at the suspension mounts or are they under the car?

I'll be checking the suspension and under the car and under the carpets etc.

Just pay very close attention to the top suspension mounts under the bonnet, they were horrid on this car, look down past the elecrical box/loom and between the tops and the bulkhead.

another thread resurrection!

How are you getting on with the pinin?

theres one at a dealer local to me = I'm wondering about chopping in my old merc for day to day snotter duties, including a 70 mile round trip commute, as the merc was useless in last years snow!

Bit of a nightmare with the first three door one, to be honest. Despite it driving fine, and being in amazing condition in the inside, and the outside being in ok condition for age, the front cross member that holds the radiator and has the tie-rod mountings corroded through meaning that one of the tie rods let go. Not catastrophically, but it could have been very bad.

However, I really need a second vehicle, that is 4wd for the commute to work and driving here in the Alps when it is very snow. So I went looking for another one. I managed to find a 2004 54 plate with 34000 miles on it with 1 owner from new. It's a 5 door 2.0 GDI Elegance with leather, air con, etc. The first thing I checked was the front cross member for rust. It did have a little corrosion but nothing major but did need some work. I offered a reduced amount of money in light of this and a deal was done.

To be honest, I couldnt be happier. It really is sweet as a nut. I do 60 miles a day in it over a mountain pass and it is great, just a little thirsty. I'm averaging around 32.5 - 33.5 MPG on the onboard computer which seems to be pessimistic if anything.

I would recommend one as long as it has been well looked after and doesnt have rust all over it. If you're going to view take a 12mm socket and remove the sump guard to check the front cross member for rust.

The Super Select 4WD is brilliant - you can drive in 4WD on tarmac without transmission windup but it also has a locking center diff and low gearing. Check that it all works though! I also think the 5 doors versions come with a rear LSD so is a little more capable than the 3 door off road/when getting stuck.

Be warned, the 3 door is very small!!

This is my current one...

Here is a cut n paste of a reply I put a while back when someone asked about a petrol leak on the Pinin. It covers other points you might find useful though:

I had the same a couple of times on mine when I had it. It seemed to be the fuel flow going in overpowering the pipe bore and expelling from the breather. Not a big deal.

Also, if you want to lift yours, I got a coilover insert kit from ebay and slimmer springs, and used that on the front to go up 2". A place down south made me a set of custom rear springs for £120 to give me the same ride height when fitted. The slimmer front springs meant I could use Mitsu FTO alloys with wider tyres.

With that lot done, and it cost beer money all the way in, it went off road pretty well.

Oh, and my local gunshop does a bag of crushed walnut shells for £15. I used those to decoke the head. Again, cheap top tip.

Have fun. Mine lives on a farm now working for it's living. It does a good job by all accounts.

How do you de coke ? Just pour the walnut shells into the air intake with the filter out?
