My current daily driver...1987 500sl.

Its had lots of work done. Very carefully stripped down and resprayed (no nasty overspray/paint in thewrong places or masking), refurbished wheels, all new seals, new leather, new roof, all suspension bushes etc have been changed, new shocks, new steering box and most important- AC compressor replacement- best $500 ever spent.

Its noisy (lots of windnoise) but otherwise very useable and parts are quite easy to find and relatively cheap. Handles 45deg C with no issues.

Just as winter looms I have sold my MX5 at a painful AED1k loss over my six months of ownership and 12,000 kms.

As I arrived back in the office and considered the pains of calling Hurtz I overhear a conversation about a Golf GTI which one of the Directors returned as he left last month. An enquiry reveals it is available for three months at a lease 'contribution' of 2k per month.

The Golf GTI hire car - surely the fastest car in Dubai!

Lovely. I had a 107 SL like this as a daily driver back in the UK. Mine was white too! I've always thought these would be perfect for Dubai.

I bought an R129 SL500 recently. Last of the properly built Mercs (W124 platform). Very impressive car. The Bobby Ewing shape is more beautiful and also incredibly well built but the driving experience might just be a tad too classic to be a well used daily driver (esp if you do regular DXB-AUH runs).

Edited to add: just noted that Paracetamol uses his 107 in 45C heat without problem. Wasn't expecting that, so maybe it can be used as a daily...

I use the MG all year long, BUT it is bloody hot for me and the engine (flywheel fan, not electrical) does get hot.

She fine in the heat (AC is amazing and water temp doesnt exceed 85 deg C). Only thing that suffers is the temp guage as it only goes up to 40 deg C. Its so funny watching it go off the scale smile.

You are correct that it aint no DXB to AD car. Far too noisy. Its better with the hardtop.

There was an immaculate 500sl 129 for sale in AD a few weeks ago. Nearly bought it but it was a 94 and there are so many horror stories about the wiring looms failing- decided not to get involved given I have just got a 113 280sl and already have the 500sl (and have something very very special and collectible on the way from the US..watch this space)...

Lovely cars Phil. Am beginning to think though that if you put the same effort into rebuilding your car as you do to surfing dubizzle, you'd be at the trackday tomorrow...

Meh!

Only got the chassis back last night. Redone paint is a vast improvement. All set to drop the drivetrain back in tomorrow if you'd care to assist?

Ps - if your car has the caterham cage you're eligable to run in uaetcc class 6 and would be running at class 2 beating pace. I'll spanner for you if interested?
