She passed her driving test over a year ago here in Dubai and she hasn't driven since - too scared. Having hired a crapbox for a weekend and sat beside her, they basically didn't teach her anything. Technically she can drive down a road and do a U-Turn - that's pretty much it. I can't blame her, it's not her fault - things like one instructor being 7 months preggers and nodding off during the lesson, having 4 other people in the car and only getting a 10 minute go in her hour lesson - its sucks, but we all knew that. Get a GPS (or a car with a built in one) it will stop her having to navigate and drive. When we moved out SWMBO could aledgedly drive but there was always some reason she wouldn't in Dubai. Once I got her a GPS she was much happier. No matter how lost you get it will always get you home. It's a good point and I'd hope that what ever we get would be of a spec that would have it anyway. Bloody Ramadan timings are a bugger - I want to pop in to the various delears on the way home but everything is closed until 8:30pm.

Surely "all" women can technically drive.......
When I bought the SWMBO a gps I set the voice to the female option. When asked why I responded "well you never follow my instructions so if I set it to the male voice you won't follow his instructions, however if a female tells you were to turn I have a fighting chance of you following the instructions".
The father-in-law nodded silently in the back ground.
Of course I still got the odd phone call "how do I get to...", well put the gps on, only to be told "I left it at home"....... Now she leaves it in the car.

Drove a Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7l and the Prado 4.0l earlier today.
The Prado, while I know it's off road pedigree, was sooooooooooo dull on road - the 4x4 equivalent of a Mk IV Golf. It's obviously going to spend most of the time on road so it has to have something about it but the Prado was...zzzzzzzzzzzz.
Was very imptressed by the Jeep - the Overland gets all the top range 4x4 and ride options and in Sport you could hustle it along nicely and as it has the air suspension, it stays composed.
Need to drive the LR 4 now but I think that to look at a new one, as there is virtualy no choice used, its pricey and I think the Jeep will give better value.
ok - pet peeve - why do they over-servo brakes so much now. I'm used to the Porsche which needs a hefty shove and I nearly put both salesmen through the windscreen multiple times.

Is the 5.7 really worth it over the new 3.6 Pentastar? I heard that was 300bhp of fairly economical goodness.

Overland is only available with the 5.7l - plus it's a V8 for extra PH points.
Not massively worried about economy given the price of juice here.
One other thing to add - the sales bloke looked rather bemused when I said I wanted the smaller 18" wheels from the Limited instead of the 20" standard rims. Wasn't a problem as someone else would probably be very happy to get the upgraded rims on their Limited.

are you sure? it'd be better to have the 20s at resale time and buy a set of 18s for offroading.

I've heard of that happening but never seen it with the usual guys we go with and we do some pretty full-on stuff.

Happened to one of the families we go off road with, with their daughter in the back. The car thought that it was going to roll over and deployed all the airbags. She's been too scared to venture off road since. As far as her Dad could find out, there's no easy way of disabling all the airbags.

I bought a LR3 out here in Oz, very happy with it so far - I considered the Japanese alternatives but they're just so dull.
From what I've seen the difference between the LR3 and LR4 isn't too major - shiny bits on the outside and a tweaked dashboard.

A colleague bought a diesel Defender, but it meant lining up with all the trucks at the petrol station!
