As a Venue, It's a million times better than Losail for starters! Well organised for entry and getting out of the place and you've got different grandstands around the track to choose from. Still no booze though which is an essential ingredient of a motorsport event.

I rate Bahrain for a weekend away, has got loads of Bars and restaurants and lots of Hotels to choose from.

F1 itself looks dire this year though, can only get better I guess.

Go the Brno for the MotoGP in August.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but I am looking at booking losail today for the motogp in two weeks.

I am aware that there is no booze at the circuit, and you are stuck to one grandstand on the straight. However whilst I'm here I may as well do it once. Not been to Doha yet, so combining it with a work visit makes it a cost effective trip - just my wife's flight, and the race tickets to pay for. Also have some friends there I hope to catch up with.

Any recommendations on hotels in Doha, and is it easy enough to get a cab to/from the circuit? I believe is approx 20 mins outside of Doha. Any other recommendations of what to do whilst in Doha?

what happened to the sarnie van?

flights and tickets come to £150, cheaper than doing AD and its another country with questionable human rights to tick off the list....

do you have to take your passport out with you like qatar?

Depends what your budget is but most of the MotoGP chaps stay at the Grand Hyatt, thats a nice place and its at the right end of the city to get to the track.

Peronally I'd stay in the Hilton in West Bay, they have a nice Trader Vics, decent beach, you can walk round into the Four Seasons for some of the best food in the city, (pool grill for lunch, nusantao for night), plus its close to most of the other hotels in Doha, like walking distance close. You'll also be on the West Bay Bus loop which is a free of charge bus service that operates in West Bay.

Taxi Drivers will try have your pants down to get to Losail, you'll probably be looking at 75QAR each way on the meter. I have no doubt they'll try it on for alot more than that with no meter on though.

As for what to do in Doha, depends where you're from and what your budget is and how long you are in town for? ...the corniche amazing for a walk with time of year and you get a great view of the city day or night. Rolexes seem to be cheaper in Doha than the UAE if thats a temptation? Desert Safaris are pretty fun and cheap and are a good way to spend half a day.

Lol..no booze at the circuit? Just buy tickets to the Gulf Air tent it's full of booze, buy them at the ticket tent by the petrol station on the way in. Have to book rooms in hotels early as they get full up and prices seem to double for the week. New Four Seasons just opened, but except for Sofitel they are all a good taxi ride away though.

Entry to the Gulf Air Tent is about $150 isn't it?

I was given an F1 Raceday ticket last year and went to go whet my whistle, put me off knowing I would need to drink myself into a stupor to even make the price per pint anywhere near worth it.

US$150 is for entry into the Gulf Air tent for all three days, a bit pricey if only going one day though.

I used to live there, used to go up the circuit all the time to see if anything was going on, dead easy to get too and a good venue. I went to the GP when I was there but only on the Friday practise, still plenty going on around the track.
One thing my tickets did get me was entry to the Aussie V8 touring cars the weekend before which was wayyyyy better and AND for the massive price of 3BD extra once there you could get into the bar area with balconies over the pits. Sold proper pies too!

Anyway.... look at staying in Juffair which is where the original US base is as there are plenty of bars and places to eat with more upmarket places within 5mins. Its not the quietest of areas but you wont be bored. Also there are a couple of hire car outlets so you could hire a motor and drive out to the circuit if wanted as its dead easy to get to from there. The Gulf hotel is big and in a good location but don't know what its like to stay in?

also, I sat on the grandstand which backed on to the main straight/pits which gave a pretty good overview of the circuit.
