Finally I have got around to booking a day in the desert on a motorbike. More accurately a half day, as don't think my fitness is up to a full day at the moment!

Anyone fancy joining me, the booking site is:-

https://bigreddxb.rezdy.com/87740/ktm-desert-adven...

I've booked on the 08:00 half day tour on Saturday 6th Feb 2015

I believe you need a basic understanding of how to ride a bike, and if you have ridden off road even better. However if a competent road rider I am sure you will be fine, I cannot imagine will be too crazy.

Never ridden off road (road and track yes) and I am off work between 17th and 26th Feb..... and SWMBO is not back until Feb 20th.

Let us know how it was.

I will do.

They also do a more basic tour for 2 hours taster session. So you could always do that one day, and the 4 hour after that.

I used to ride Enduro before, and had a KTM450 in UK, so have an idea of how it works, but have never ridden on sand.

Thinking about it - the most difficult thing on an Enduro bike is feeling the gears through the boots, and it does take a bit of getting used to, so the 2 hour session could be good for bike familiarity before doing the 4 hour and actually enjoying yourself.

That sounds very logical. Now using normal man logic I will sign up for a full day course.....

I suspect it will be the road shift pattern that gets me followed by several face fulls of sand.

I would LOVE to do this! I'm itching to get back on the saddle out here after selling my bike in the UK. Never done enduro before, but it looks like huge fun.

Only problem is that I work on a Saturday, so I'm tied to either a Friday or possibly a Thursday afternoon.

Get it done lads, it's such a good laugh. I go out most weekends, even during the summer (albeit its bloody hot), but you do burn around 3000-3500 calories in the summer during a few hours riding. So tell the wife its good for fitness! biggrin

Well I'm definitely up for giving it a go. Is there a large community of people who convene in the Dunes (i.e. if I was to hypothetically buy a bike, and fling it into the back of the truck which I may or may not have bought for this purpose, would I find lots of like-minded souls giving it laldy in the sand of a Thursday/Friday evening)?

Yup! I ride with about 5-8 like minded souls every weekend. But there must be at least 40-60 people who set off from the same place where we do. We start 6am-7am.

Right, I'm going to get in touch these Gas It boys and take it from there. Next Sat is a no-go for me, alas, otherwise I'd have joined you.

I fear you might be about to cost me a Yammy WR250...

Get a WR450 or KTM 450. More torque for the sand wink

Just to add, if you cannot join Fats25 on the same day, check out mxdubai.com. They are doing the same thing with new KTM's.

What are the options for those of us whose 2 wheeled experience is more of the twist and go 50cc moped variety?

I was not going to buy a MX bike until q3 now I have a shortlist on dubizzle.

I'm known for doing stupid things on a whim so I must NOT look at those CR500 2-stroke things for sale there.

Which I obviously have been doing...

Can do any of the dates suggested but i'd either need a starter lesson or someone with a bike to teach me the basics beforehand.

So I sent an e-mail to MX Dubai and this is the response I got. 19th Feb here I come.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for your request.

We would have slots free on the 19th Feb (Friday) for the beginner tour, the 18th is unfortunately already fully booked. The tour starts at 14:30 and its a perfect ride for first time sand riders, so no worries about that smile

The costs would be 690.- AED for the 2 hours. Our bikes are 2016 model KTM 450 EXC bikes and also the wear, gear and protection kit is from KTM. In case you need a pickup/drop off service we offer that as well for 150,- AED per person. A taxi is not recommended as it will be hard to find one from the desert back after the ride.

Just inform us and I will book you in.
