is there anything better than booking.com / trivago for uae residents? i am surprised at the lack of deals available given the time of year.

Have a look online or visit dnata.

They have a price match (which takes some argument, but eventually gets adhered to after 15 emails and a few visits).
I used trip advisor for prices then spoke to dnata.

That doesn't make sense. So you go online to get a price then instead of buying you go somewhere else to buy it, and argue with them on the rate?

I was hoping there's a local site I didn't know about. If I use hotels.com I see reasonable (but not great for summer) prices but then there's 20% added in taxes and service charge making it pretty much rack rate which is ste

Sorry. We have a load of dnata credit to use, so find the cheapest advertised price- on any website- then use dnata to book so we get the 1200aed to use.
