Use of Americanese.

If you knocked out "and the OH are", you'd be saying...Me is looking.

Which is a bit daffy...smile

That went slightly off topic.. We are still in the process of negotiating. Wife's potential future firm are only offering a one off 6 month loan for housing, so we'd need to save for next years housing as well as paying for this years if that makes sense, so we are hoping to negotiate a repeatable 12 year loan (I am led to believe that is the norm?)

My job hunt seems to be hindered by the fact everyone is on holiday over there (Presuming due to the heat) But expect multiple additional topics on what car, where to live etc soon.

Thank you for the sensible replies.
I've PM'd you as I might be able to help you out.

How long have you lived in Dubai for? How much of the Middle east have you travelled?

It's relevant since most people who live in this part of the world or have spent any amount of time here tend to see past the scare headlines typical of the DM.

Bump....

How is it over there? I'm still looking and have had a few interviews, one offer and hopefully another on its way.

So far all contact I've had is through local contacts / friends - nothing at all through recruiters.

Not sure they're much use anyway to be honest..
I 've been registered with various local agencies for over a year and had one call so far!
Personal contacts and linked in are the main routes to go really.

UK based recruiters are the best. I get on average, 2-3 requests per week to send my CV to them for positions in the ME (if I am interested in, which I am not). In 10 years of working in the ME, I never touched local recruiters (unless it was a UK recruiter with an office in DXB/AUH/Qatar - are they classed as local recruiters?)

UK recruiters are, IMHO, much more professional and provide you with feedback.

As said above, LinkedIn is your best source. Change your status to "Looking for work in the ME" you may be surprised at the response.

I've found exactly the same. Only 'ins' seem to be with people I know over here putting me in touch with their equivalent over there. Recruiters seem to be worse than useless.

Thought it would be a lot more straightforward if i'm honest.General feedback seems to be things are fairly level over there, but not buoyant. So positions are only being made available as and when.

We're committed now, due to fly out on the 1st December so maybe a pro-longed holiday to start.

Your position in a Contractor's organisation rarely exists. Yes, D&B contracts do exist, but it is not your "true" D&B format as you would expect in the UK.

Suggest you try Consulting firms who do design/supervision works in DXB/AUH/Qatar. You are more likely to find something there.

Yorky - Thanks, that's exactly what I've been doing. I've a lot of pre-construction experience as well working with clients to develop designs so hoping I can exploit that.

I've got 3 uk based recruiters on the go and only one of them has any decent communication with me. He's very good though and honest with me. I can't change my Linkedin status as things would get very messy with my current employer in the UK.

I had a second interview yesterday with a big consultant which seemed to go well. The one offer i've had so far (main contractor) was a ridiculous low ball offer. The search goes on though. Something will come up i'm sure. Most people I speak to predict a busy 2017 (although everyone predicted it for 2016 also).

Fingers crossed Phil, I'm hoping that upturn in work sees me finding something sensible to come back to.

Well we've done it, Got here yesterday and are now in a hotel for the next few weeks. Just need to find somewhere to live and a job and we'll be set. Wife doesn't start work until Monday so got a few days to find our feet.

Does anyone have experience of doing the Visa run? I'm presuming it's fairly straightforward (Internet tells me so)

How easy is it to rent a car? We are ok whilst in the hotel (right next to a metro station) but initial plan is to move our to a villa somewhere (we have a dog, so need a garden) So will need something temporarily until I've found a job and got a visa.

Any tips / recommendations on things to do in the first few weeks would be great?
