I have seen a secondhand car in France I want to buy. I want to pick it up and drive back to Calais for import back to UK.Does anyone know about transit plates and insurance to be able to drive back through France.Do I need to go to prefecture? If anyone has an answer to this or has done this themselves I would be grateful.Thankyou

I think it's just normal UK insurance with European cover.

When doing it the other way round, we just picked up a car in the UK and had French insurance.

Can we presume the car is on French plates? If so as Terry says try to get it insured by a uk outfit. You may need a copy of the log book (cart Gris) for your insurance company.

If that's not possible then you could French insure it if you have a French address you can use. Otherwise stick it on a trailor or contact me and I will deliver it to the uk for you on my transporter trailor.

You must be able to get UK insurance , you won't get fully comprehensive but you will get 3rd party only.
I had my Caterham here on UK insurance for a year and then on its UK plates with French Insurance for a "while" afterwards, all 3rd party only
I really don't think the Prefecture will tell you anything

Where in France is the car? Where in the UK would you like it ? Is it particularly valuable? PM if you need help.

If you don't mind me asking, which French insurance company gave you insurance for a UK plated 7?
I've been looking into it and not had any luck at all, the ones who know what a Caterham is just laugh when I tell the it's still on UK plates.
