Anyone on here had one? I haven't, yet, but have read loads of people getting a speeding ticket, or driving whilst on the phone ticket, whilst their cars have been safely parked.

I've been told that the bib randomly sit at the side of the road, taking reg numbers down, then going back to the station and doing the deed of issueing fines. One bib is understood to have reached AED1m in fines in April.

Also, aparently, there is no contesting it. Bib in the station will simply shrugg their shoulders and tell you to pay, end of.

Was just wondering...

I've seen them at junctions in AUH writing down numbers of people who shoot through reds/cut up etc. Plenty of scope for error!

A friend had a speeding ticket for before he even bought his brand new car.

Yeah, it's happened to me.

Car was in Sharjah at the time, but the fine said I was driving without a seatbelt in Jumeirah. I don't think I have ever driven a car without a seatbelt on.....

The effort involved in trying to prove it (whilst not exactly proof, I had Salik evidence that the car had passed to Sharjah slightly earlier than the alleged incident) is just not worth it. Drop your pants and take it. Treat it like the expat tax that it is.

By the way, it was AED 400 in my case.

The bend over and take it approach seems to be pretty much the other way out unless you have Wasta or proof it wasn't you.

My other half had a speeding fine that wasn't hers, luckily it had a photo attached which show they had assigned it to the wrong plate letter, only took an email to solve

I've had this twice.

Once last year for speeding when I was in New York and the car was in bits at TAM and still was when I returned. Had to take the passport with the stamps and tickets to the police and they were having none of it. They just kept saying no you have to pay. I had a local guy that works for us dealing with all these sorts of things then go in and it all went away.
The second one was just 3 weeks ago. Apparently changing lane incorrectly in Meydan St at 9.30am when I was in Abu Dhabi. Lost that one as I couldnt prove it. 200Dhs and 2 black points!
Its very frustrating to say the least!

I think they drop off when you re-register your car every year

Is there a maximum number you can accrue or are they of no real consequence to anybody ?

You're allowed 24 IIRC.

They work on a rolling year also IIRC.

Yeah 24 as above.

It's for the bib only, insurers don't ask if you have any

If you hit 24 points, does that mean you can't drive until they come off ?

You can pay to remove up to 8 points at a rate of 100Dhs a point - but that's only if the police allow you to.

To be honest, you've got to be doing a whole lot of stupid stuff to rack up 24 black points. Most speeding tickets don't incur any points whatsoever

Sounds like a nicer system than the points system here - except for the made up penalties.

I guess it has to be this way....otherwise, EVERYONE would be banned.

Actually....

For "Using horn in a disturbing way" is 2 black points and 100 Dhs fine.

And "Opening left door of taxi" is 3 black points and 100 Dhs fine.

However, "Driving unlicensed vehicle" is no points and 200 Dhs fine

And "Causing death of others" is ONLY 12 points and a fine decided by the court.

But "Parking in fire hydrant places, spaces allocated for people with special needs and ambulance parking" is 4 points and 1000 Dhs fine.

I saw all the penalties when I started driving and thought 'wow better be careful'. Then I realised none are enforced.

Not even drink driving.

Drinking and driving can get you in a whole new dimension of deep sh!t.

If you get cought or have an accident.

There has been a recent campaign against it so I'd imagine they will be out looking for expats driving in town at midnight on the weekends....
