Recently paid off 7k in fines - just paid it and didn't even bother checking. lots of it was for Salik fines whick I'm trying to get sorted because I have Salik!
Excuse my ignorance chaps, but what's "salik"?
Salik is the road toll for the main highway running through Dubai. You don't need to stop at a toll booth though - you get a little sticker with microchip embedded for your windscreen. Pass under the toll gates and your Salik account is debited accordingly.

You get fined if you pass through the toll gate and don't have any credit in your Salik account.

They are in the process of stopping people and asking for documents. Make sure you have the original registration in your car not a copy (unless it is a hire car where the copy is OK).

I got pulled over last night. I was doing 150k coming onto palm in my new GT2 smile so no complaints - it's a fair cop!

The copper was polite and told me he was going to impound my car for 2 months but seemed more interested in giving me a fine for not having the original registration document with me.

We went to my house to drop off the girlfriend with police following, when we got there I explained I only got the car 24 hours earlier & then girlfriend did the charming female bit 'we're sorry, etc..'. He melted and let me off with a warning.

So they are not all bad & common sense prevailed.

150...on the Palm....in between the speed humps? Damn fine work that!

re documents, do you have to carry insurance details as well? I'm guessing so.

150 in a residential area? Knob.

Common sense? What common sense? He should have chucked your car in the sandy pit. Common sense did not prevail, it went out of the window, along with the law.

Oily Dan - thanks Mr Halo, polished it recently!

To answer - no not in a residential area, coming onto palm not actually on the Palm.

11 o'clock at night no traffic. Slowed to 60 before I got onto Palm. Copper stated that was one of the reasons why no fine.

10 years in Dxb, 7 years with over 400BHP and only 2 speeding tickets (minor ones). Prior to that 16 years in the UK with zero fines.

Where there are pavements or people I am very careful.

Oh, I guess that makes it OK then. As long as there are no people around it is acceptable to choose your own speed limit.

Blimey, Dan, don't we want the facts first?

I am presuming, of course, that am611 is talking about coming off the SZR onto the multi-lane off-ramp which winds onto a straight stretch of multi-lane highway before descending towards the residential area (Shoreline Aps). In which case, at night the highway section is empty for a good kilometre or so.

It's not hard to work up a bit of speed and safe to do so.

Unless am611 is talking about the Sufouh Rd off-ramp, in which case, yes, 150 would be silly.

Facts:

Clocking 150 kms/hr
Vicinity of Palm Jumeriah

What else do you need?

It might be perfectly safe to do it, especially so in a decent motor, but what if.....what if.....

And I'm not claiming to be a perfect driver; i've had my moments of silly. But I don't come onto a public forum and tell the bloody world, then have the audacity to say that the cop showed common sense in letting him off?

IMHO it would have been 'common sense' to apply the bloody law, book the driver and impound the car.

Harris - spot on.

SZR entrance & with empty road possible to get quicker in a good car and then be slow well before entering Palm.

Fact: Wrong to speed & in a black & white world then I do not disagree with Oilydan.

Fact (but not a defense): It was my first 24 hours with the car, I had not had chance to see what it could do, it was the first empty road where it is safe to get to that speed.

The common sense part is it that it probably had more impact letting me go with a warning rather than taking the car which would have just p****d me off.

I posted it here to show that not all coppers in Dxb are looking to raise money through made up tickets as they have been tending to do over the past couple of years.

It was actually nice to see the copper being pleasant but not inflexible as the reality was no one was in danger.

Final note though I have learnt my lesson...

Chilli - you need to carry 2 things, your driving license and the original registration document (the registration references the insurance policy.
