Thursday or Sunday?

As i understand it, the govt are off from Weds but the beards are going to meet on Weds evening to see whether us mere mortals will get Thursday off or not.

The moon is due to set at 6.18pm on Weds so good luck with that lads!

If it is called Thurs I get it off, if it is called Fri then ZERO time off.

I'd bet my bottom dollar it is Friday frown

I hate to be the bearer, and all that, but I think it's Friday. Well, that's where the smart money is around here.....well, if that sort of thing were allowed!

I had resigned myself to that ages ago, then they went and declared it on Weds for the public sector so now my hopes are up!

Just heard from our agents (a local, private company) they have been given Thursday off...that's usually a good sign that the private sector will get the day off.

Mu ha ha haa haaaaa! And I quote:

"we are aware of our role as a leading agency in the delivery of services for the ministries and governments here in the UAE and Middle East, as such we will also respectfully observe this 29th day of Ramadan as a public holiday. Therefore, 'HITCH78's employers' will observe three days, Wednesday 8th, Thursday 9th and Sunday 12th September as the Eid al Fitr public holidays for 2010."

My heart bleeds for you. I don't get any extra days off, what with the private sector holidays falling on the regular weekend.

Gulf News and Khaleej Times seem to be saying that we should have 2 days off?

If it makes any of you feel any better I am now going to be working a half day tomorrow so its just a four day weekend for me...and a day in lieu of course.

Suddenly I feel part of the group again!

Was hoping to go and visit the in-laws over the weekend, flying early Friday, put in for my Indian visa on Sunday am and then told after I'd gone through everything that it might not get delivered on Thursday (4 working days as usual) because it might be Eid.

I'm now calling every 30 mins to find out if it is ready for collection at the Rashadiya office but no one knows as it is unlikely that they'll update the system by close of business.

So, I have to go there for 5pm and hang around for an hour on the hope that it turns up or hope that tomorrow isn't called as Eid - if it is I'll have to try and cancel my flight.

Amazing this moon sighting thing - I have a mechanical watch based on an 150 year old complication that is accurate for 110 years for measuring the phases of the moon and yet with all of the modern technology to hand, getting on with your life means waiting for a bloke on a hill to perhaps catch a glimpse of the new moon. This is then compounded by the fact the moon will be rising where the sun is setting this time round and he'll have to 'make a call' as to whether it is there or not as the light from the sun might obscure the true sighting.

Awesome!

It's not the moon sighting which is the issue. It's the calling of public holidays by the government which needs an overhaul.

Given that we have a range of probabilities for Eid falling on a given day, call the 2 most likely days as public holiday and if there's no coinciding weekend, add a third day. Job done.

Our HR department are equally moronic (western expats, I might add) - they decided to award us Sunday and Monday, conveniently forgetting the "known unknown" which is Thursday. So if Eid falls tomorrow, what then? "Oh well, it's a low probability anyway". Eh? That's your genius excuse?

As for the moon sighting, I actually think that's part of the charm of Ramadan, but those who don't participate are maybe not so enamoured.
