That's not good. I applied online and got my licence the next day! The only thing I did wrong was tick the ''pay extra for express delivery'' square, hence the speedy delivery. Doh! This is not accurate. If a piece of safety equipment is fitted to a car that does not require it, it does not need to comply with the requirements in the book. The only requirement is that the installation does not itself cause a safety problem that would not exist if the item was not installed. The MSA issued a bulletin to scrutineers a few years ago clarifying this, not all that long after I had accepted the recommendation of a chief scrutineer to exclude a roadgoing car with a non-compliant roll cage (in retrospect, I wish I'd have stood my ground on that one and let the car run).

That's a shame? Who told you to buy the Go Racing Pack? That was duff advice as that pack is for circuit racing. Nobody told me as such, but the error message I got from my online application ("you must apply by post") kinda implied it. My fault ultimately I guess, although the PDF form is nowhere to be seen on the actual "apply for a license" page (only on the separate "forms" page). Anyway, lesson learned

You could always explain to the MSA applications dept' and see if they'll refund the difference? Worth a shot I reckon. Bumping this thread, rather than start anew one

Not ideal as a first event IMHO. Circuit is short, narrow and covered in loose gravel. There are a few before then including GBMC North Weald (20th April), B19MC Hethel (4th May) and HCAAC Debden (11th May). North Weald is an ideal place for beginners, although it's very bumpy.carl_w said:

Ive been as a spectator a few times so have an idea of the layout, and whilst I agree somewhere with a little more room for error may be preferable, Running on a coned airfield doesnt have the same appeal to mejeffw said:
A roadgoing production car in a roadgoing class only needs a timing strut and numbers.....apart from that if it would pass an MoT you are good to go. Extinguishers and Cages/Harness are not required.
To avoid any scrutineering issues on the day, you also should wrap the main battery earth lead with yellow tape and fix a sticker by the ignition switch showing the 'off' position. Crystal Palace was my first event 4 years ago. I had a great time and was made to feel very welcome. It's not the longest course, but still quite technical and great fun.
I went to North Weald once and it's in such terrible condition, I never bothered again.

Race numbers, or some way of letting startline officials your car numnber are required by some venues (also I was asked to mark where the towing hooks were with a bit of red tape).
One MSA Scrutineer requested sight of the MOT and V5 documents (only happened once in 11 years of competing, but I was not expecting such a request).
