Gents,

I need to spec a decent wet tyre for a endurance race in a few weeks.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Choice is open, cost not a major factor. It's at Anglesey which is relatively high tyre deg.

Cheers all,

Ben

I was at Oulton Park the other weekend and there was a chap selling and fitting tyres, he said the one of the best wet tyres at the moment is the Nankang NS2R...eta, the Nankang has quite deep tread, so good for endurance/water diplacement

I was after a good wet tyre with ok dry performance and went for the Federal 595 RSR which were, as expected, ok in the dry but haven't had a chance to use them in anger in the wet. Again, tread is quite deep on these.

You say choice is open so I guess by that you mean you're not limited to List 1a/1b tyres?

Depends what you mean by best....

Ultimate performance would be given by a proper race wet (Dunlop/Avon) but for an endurance race you would probbly need more than one set, especially at Angelsey.

If you want something that will give decent performance in the wet but continue to work in drying conditions and not wear out or overheat quickly then I would look at Toyo R1Rs (if you can get them).

Road tyres (including the Nankang and Federal above) are st in the wet as they are too hard, regardless of how much tread depth they have.

The other thing you need to consider is what is available in the sizes you require and the weight of the car makes a big difference to tyre suitability.

I'm guessing you're running an Mx5 (just a guess) and if you don't want more than one set of wheels with wets on then I think you won't go far wrong with R1Rs.

Thanks gents, much appreciated.

The car is a BMW Compact Cup car. It's set up to run 888s in the dry. Nankang are sponsoring the event so will see if a deal can be done on those suggested.

Thanks again.

Is it not Nankang only that race Ben?

If the car's set up for R888s then R1Rs would definitely be the best bet. Honestly, you'll be dog slow on road-based tyres.

If it's the Race of Remembrance then it appears so,

Tyres:
All cars are to run Nankang NS-2R tyres. These can be pre-ordered, purchased, delivered, fitted and balanced on-site

nb, aren't R1R's road based tyres?

Gents, the single supplier rule is changing, too many teams were running different products so the management have turned it to full open!

I used R1R's as a wet for a while and they were crap. In damp conditions they were no where near proper race wets for speed, and when it started to dry out they over heated very quickly and were very slow.

I would use a set of brand new r888's for light rain/damp, and proper race wets when its fully wet. if the track stays properly wet the full race wets will last. I use pirelli's, but any that fit will do.

What size are you running?

I can do you some Kumho v70 wet cut in soft, they are cut within the MSA regs.

What does that mean, Andy? MSA confirmed to CSCC that cutting tyres means they are no longer a homologated tyre and therefore no longer a LIist 1B tyre.

Yes, R1Rs are nowhere near as good as proper full race wets, I covered that point in my initial post. They are however the best 1b tyre for use in the wet/damp FACT! If it starts to dry up then proper race wets will overheat and fall apart in no time. In a car that is ~1000kg (why I said it also depends what car you are using) R1RS WILL continue to give good grip as it dries up and will give 90% of the performance of R888s in the dry, on a lightweight car.

They are definitely the best (one size fits all) solution for wet/intermediate use on a fairly light car.
