Hadn't seen this anywhere but I see the MSA have announced that Frontal Head Restraints will be compulsory in circuit racing (apart from some historic stuff) from 2016.

I think its a great idea but I'm surprised they haven't given their usual 3 years notice.

MSA mag confirms that HANS is compulsory for all racing from 2016, and if you have a modern (post 1999) single seater, you will need HANS next year. Like helmets, they have to conform to FIA standards, which are subject to change / upgrade over time (as per helmets and overalls).

presumably that means a lot of re-fitting of belts to get the required location and dimensions too.

And in some cases, seats will need to be changed too as not all allow sufficient room between the headrest and helmet for a HANS device. I guess there'll be quite a few people buying new helmets too. Could get very expensive but it always has been and always will be in Motorsport.

It's amazing how they dictate this sort of stuff .

Don't get me wrong the Hans device is a great piece of safety equipment and if I was driving a single seater I would already be using one.

However surely something like this should be MY decision whether I use one or not, but then I guess you could say the same thing about a suit and helmet.

It's a shame for those people who don't want to spend the money.

That said, I wouldn't go on track without my HANS, and I'm actually thinking about moving to one of those upper body strap things which looks to be even 'better'.

I would if I could but its a relief that Historic cars seem exempt..Not sure how I would use one in my 68 TVR. I barely fit never mind more restraint equipment!!

The Hans is a very sensible precaution. I use it but find it a real pain getting in and out of the car. I am fairly tall. I've heard of arm restraints. What the hell is that all about. The life time of stuff is utter rubbish. For 2015 I have to change my belts. They have done 2 races and 3 test days. Seat probably the year after. It is just such an unnecessary expense.
I was chatting with a good mate a while back. I asked if he wore a hans in his 962. I wear nothing. If I have an off the biggest risk is fire. Well in truth with a big off that is the least of your worries. As he said getting out is the most pressing issue.

In 20 plus years I have seen three cars catch fire after accidents and four people tragically lose their lives to basal skull fractures (none were wearing HANS) so by my (albeit smallish sample) the greater risk is from an injury that FHR are designed to reduce/eliminate.

Funny I was just thinking about getting a hans for this season - then realised I would need a new seat and new helmet as well. I know safety shouldn't be compromised but that's quite a hit to the budget so I will do in stages and be compliant in 2016

You don't need a new seat specifically for Hans devices; it's a marketing scam. Hans can be used with any normal race seat, ditto belts.

CSCC were specifically told by one of the Hans maufacturers about 2 years ago that any standard race seat is acceptable as long as the belt installation is in accordance with the guidelines.

I have used a standard Sparco steel framed clubman seat in my 924S, with a Hans, with no problem what so ever.

It may be advisable to have a seat with the ear "wings" to help mitigate side impacts problems but they are definitely not a requirement and Hans manufacturers themselves do not recommend Hans specific seats - no such thing.
