Hi all,

I'm starting to look at transporters for my racing and also for transporting cars around so a 2 jobs in 1 type thing and a compromise between motor home and transporter.

It needs to sleep 4-6 people and carry 2 cars. I realise this won't really be possible with a 7.5t and I am applying for my C licence now to start the process ahead of next race season.

Can anyone please share experiences or advice with what sort of thing I should be looking at,

There is a Mercedes actros 1843ls 18t rigid truck, sequential type box, it has been adapted for being a race weekend transporter with tail lift and lots of side lockers etc, it looks interesting space wise and modern without being massive budget, but I haven't the foggiest about how it will compare with others on running costs and ease of use etc. I believe (hard to find exact figures) the consumption on such a vehicle won't be much more than 10mpg in reality.

cheers

Graham

We have a 7.5t race truck which does about 20mpg. A friend has an artic which does about 9mpg and costs a fortune to fill with diesel.

graham, can i play devils advocate here by asking what the primary function of the truck is to be. if it is to shift cars around as a priority and be a motorhome as a secondary then why not look at a 7.5 tonne 2 car transporter and a caravan. as you know me from fb i know not much about trucks but i do know a fair bit about caravans. I saw this on autotrader ucks.autotrader.co.uk/used-trucks/iveco/eurocargo/2008-iveco-eurocargo-7-50tonne-enclosed-beavertail-car-transporter-diesel-lutterworth-tfpa-8aa13bdf4791e98f0147960e19bd1de2/categorysubcategory/category/rigid-trucks

looks an alright curtainsider to me, then something like this would do the job http://caravans.autotrader.co.uk/used-caravans/bai...

That's 7.5T?! I see there's only a Caterham in there so perhaps for your use it doesn't need huge load capacity, but out of interest how much does the truck itself weigh?

Hi Alan, the main purpose for a truck is to carry everything I need for a race weekend, weather that be Knockhill, Brands Hatch or Spa. So it needs to carry tools, spares, wheels, have a decent living area for my team, a GT sized race car and for the long haul trips to the continent hold an equally large road car for when I reach the destination. It can then double as a transporter if I want to shift road cars around for people or taking my road cars for servicing etc.

Yes, as it says in my post its a 7.5 t, we used it when we ran a car in GT Cup, it will hold 3 caterhams and we used it for a few rounds in the British R300s taking 2 cars to the circuit,
The truck weighs about 5.8t empty and you can still sleep 6 with a car in the back ( I know because we use to do this if we arrived late at the circuit)

It also has a huge awning that can fit 4 cars with room to work on them, I could do Preston to Snetterton on £90 worth of derv.
