ISTR they ran us around for two green flag laps due to the conditions and he dived into the pits on one of those laps. The first I knew he had pitted I had him up my chuff in the middle of Chapel the shock of which lead me to move over for him only realising a fraction of a second later we were racing for position, Doh. ISTR he got up to something like 3rd or 4th on the first race lap. Some thought it was a stroke of genius which is ridiculous as I was thinking of doing the same about 10 times a second on those two laps but thought it would take me forever to get the wheels changed over. Driving down Hangar on knackered slicks in driving rain was terrifying but OTOH a great memory I will always keep.

You are right it is very tricky but I think the best possible solution for us club racers is for the road tyre legislation to follow its natural course and for the manufacturers to come up with track day type tyres that are much better in the wet. The only worry I have in that is that currently one would expect to end up with tyres that have to much tread block movement which overheat quickly.

As some people have pointed out, it's important to be fair to the folks racing on their own as it is to those with support. And I really doubt that I could change a set of tyres on my own in less than about 6-8' minutes, by which time it's pointless racing.

You also have to consider the impact on the timetable. Most raçe meetings are run to very tight time tolerances with very little slack. If you wait for the grid to change to wets then you have probably cost 15 minutes off the timetable - now imagine that you are the last race of the day and you are told that your race has been cut short by a similar amount, I doubt you'd be very happy.

List 1b tyres are not fantastic in the wet but they arê the same for everyone, and because they are road legal are meant to have an acceptable wet performance if you drive to the conditions.

There is no perfect solution, but that's true of many situations in club racing.

Hi Andy

After thinking it through there isn't a perfect solution to fit all that's for sure.
