OP: As Andrew hints at, do consider single seaters if you like quick cars and car with lots of feedback and driver involvement (although perhaps don't start with an F3 car hehe). Costs are generally lower than road based cars and the performance a lot greater (£15k or even less will get you into most things, and even a £10k Formula Ford would run rings around the vast majority of tin tops in terms of performance). If you're interested in arrive and drive I can put you in touch with a friendly team who welcome novices and have a driving coach they work with regularly - that might be a good exploratory venture before taking the plunge and buying a car.

As somebody who races Locost in 750MC I shouldn't say it but how about Caterhams? They have an excellent novice championship and the cars really hold value well. I don't know how good the driving standards are though. Alternatively spend a year or two with us...

What I would say about classics is early on you are likely to have a shunt so maybe something easily repaired is best. The MGB sounds a really good shout on the basis everything is available.

As well as the radical I also pootle about in a historic single seater. A Reynard FF2000. Super fun and good racing. Very competetive at the sharp end. Very good grid as well. Also ff1600 with the HSCC looks a blast.

So much choice! What are your thoughts on budget and running? Self run, mates run or team run?

Thanks all for the advise. I went and looked at quite a few and in the end opted for a Renault Clio 182 which has raced in the 750mc Clio Cup this year.

Looking forward to Saturday now, especially as my passes have just arrived!

Anyone in the 750mc Clio Cup championship?

that's a good series to join the grids are huge this year, plenty of close racing to get stuck into, lots of people have moved from Stock hatch into the Clios. Are you racing at Silverstone this weekend? I will be there in Stock hatch class come and say hello (99).
