Hi all- keen to get into single seat racing. Total beginner- got my ARDS test done last week. I like the look of the monoposto club- and wondered what views people might have on the different types of vehicles available.
I am interested in views on whether to buy or rent for the first season, but more- on what car to try and get behind the wheel of.
I am looking at Formula Vauxhall Lotus, van diemens of various models etc.
Thanks, and any further advice welcome...

There a loads of FF types though no? And I appreciate I am ignorant- but is it the engine that makes a car FF- or the whole car? What is the difference between the series/ cars. Is one more suited to a novice etc.

Loads of monoposto classes and loads of FF classes/generations plus FF2000 and loads more to boot!

What are your plans re budget - to buy and run? Self run. Team run? Top team or man with a van?

Far too much choice!

I raced in Mono a few years ago in a Vauxhall Munior 16v and them a Vauxhall Lotus...

If I was making the decision to race in Mono now I would probably buy a F ford Zetec or F Ford Duratec. Cheap to buy and run, bullet proof engines and decent spares availability.

I have recently become a mechanic for a FF driver, he's on here as it happens. We haven't had any luck up to now but we'll get there.

As far as the monoposto club go, they are a good bunch. We were at donington at the weekend so mingled with a few of the other racers as our car was broken(lambo huracan GT3 ran into us on the test day). Everyone we met was welcoming and helpful. Come along to one of the meetings and have a look around/chat to some people, look at the cars etc.

As already said, the drivetrain of an 1800 zetec FF is pretty bullet proof. One word of advice would be that whichever chassis you choose be it Ray, van diemen etc then make sure you can get spares, something we are struggling with.

We are at Mallory next month if that's in your general area then pop over and have a look.

Renting or buying: If you are renting a proportion of the cost is rental of the car and also insurance, as well as buying the experience of the team, but you can quickly spend a significant amount without having the equity of the car as part of the deal.

Which type. FF's offer great value, whether its Kent, Zetec or Duratec. I think Zetec offers the best value for money, but plenty of places to race Kents (FFF / WHT). FVL's, Van Diemen Formula Fords, Jedi's or other bike engined cars, or ex-F3 Dallaras - plenty of choice for all budgets really.
