Does anyone have a recommendation for a lap timer that doesn't cost £300? I had use of an an Aims Solo at the weekend and found it useful when trying to be consistent (ish smile ).

I have a spare Android phone kicking around I could use if there are any decent apps for that but would prefer a dedicated device if possible.

What do you want it to do?

- display the lap time in the car every lap
- log data for later use
- give other displays in the car such as 'predictive' timing

If it's literally a lap timer then there is on on DT for £125 http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorsport/lap-timer...

There was a tiny GPS box for data logging with no display doing the rounds some while back. Can't remember the name though.

Well I am sprint racing for a few rounds before endurance in November, I am hoping to do some more endurance type stuff next year so one that shows if I am up or down during the lap would be great, needs to be GPS as I wont have pit crew for sprint stuff so beacon is no good.

I've not used it but I was recommended Harry's Lap Timer for the iPhone. I assume there's an Android version too.

I don't think you'll get any better than the aim solo then if you want a predictive display.

I also use a mobile phone and QStarz GPS. Race Chrono and Track addict are good as they can do segments as well as laps. I also have used trackaroo trackmaster as you can use google earth to plot sprint tracks/hil climbs and autosolos and then import them.

The 5hz or 10hz qstarz are more accurate than the phones inbuilt GPS, a mate has also created a cutout in his sun visor to mount the phone so he can use the inbuilt camera see there for examples

the data logging and video all done on the same phone

racecapture is a bit more pricey , lots of sprint tracks already available in the library though, then you get into vbox and others

I keep the phone in my pocket as I don't have a way of mounting it that scrutineers would be happy with.

MSA guidance on cameras don't allow suction as a way of mounting the camera and advises a lanyard in case the mount fails
