rules outside UK:

if the race-number looks like a real race number (not the 53 vw beelte "i want to look like a race number" thing) it needs to be covered (at least ruled-out by a piece of black tape) when the car is used on public roads.

this has nothing to do with MSA or FIA regulations...its a request from the road trafic act.
What road traffic act though? There is no road traffic act that i am aware of that says this is the case.
Likewise I agree and I work with highway law day-in day-out (I've just even had a quick scan over the sections to check). And laws don't make 'requests', they mandate what you can or can't do.

This is an MSA thing plain and simple.

Never been stopped by the police in over 4000 miles on the road.

When it comes to the MSA....nobody knows why.

Because it doesn't cause me any problems/isn't illegal and I don't want to have to remove/replace 5 sets of vinyl every time I talk the car out, I thought that would be quite obvious.

If you compete then whilst not illegal it is against the MSA regulations.

Are you really on that tight a budget you can't afford new numbers for each event? If so I suggest a new hobby.

So no not really obvious at all.

Buying new numbers and fitting them, then removing them every time he raced, which might be a dozen times a year, would be a pain in the neck I think. I would find it a burden and yes, financially too. Racing is expensive enough as it is. I am missing out because it is!

I expect the MSA have their hands full in other areas and it wouldn't even register on their radar.

Suggest a new hobby all you like, makes you sound all entitled!

Not a problem as they are clearly not taking part in a race on the public highway (which is what the MSA are trying to prevent people thinking).

I had assumed as much, never hurts to check!

MSA Regulation only refers to cars driven on the road.

Oil change, hundreds of competitors, take there numbers off every time they finish a competition and then put new ones on when they get to the next event. I would suggest it is R8Steve that feels he is entitled.

I said I don't want to have to remove/replace 5 sets of vinyl every time I talk the car out, not that i can't afford to.

Why would i want to go to the hassle of removing/replacing over 100 individual vinyl numbers a year when i don't have to?

As I said in my last post, why do you feel you are any different from any other competitor who takes there car on the road after an event(MSA)?

Hence my question over cost, numbers cost next to nothing in relation to everything else that goes with running a comp. car.

The reason for the rule AFAIK is to try and separate the MSA from people not driving on events. Remember there are several different events that do use public roads.

I don't, there are hundreds of cars that leave their numbers on, if you are around any race circuit at finishing time you will see that.

As i say, I've driven over 4000 road miles with numbers on, nothing has ever been said, it's had a thumbs up from a police officer on the motorway and a lot of members of the public.

The fact i don't drive like a tt on the roads means i don't get any hassle, if that ever changes then i will happily remove the numbers.

No one here is insinuating that it is illegal. The reason the police don't stop you is because you haven't broken the law.

What it is, is essentially a glorified PR thing for the MSA, who thinks it doesn't look good (socially rather than aesthetically)

As with anything like this - enforcement is patchy and depends entirely on how serious an individual steward takes the more minor rules.

There is nothing illegal about having them on a riad car, witness the estate agents riding around with minis with numbers on. BUT the MSA frown upon cars arriving and leaving MSA sanctioned events with numbers on, but that is their perogotive to endorse your license if they wish. Just cover them up or take them off for MSA events, simples.

Just read through some of the posts . Not sure what you compete in, but I certainly can have 15 different numbers during the year depending on what we are allocated from the various car clubs around the country. £30 of vinyl genetally lasts me a whole year. If you are in a championship where you have just 1 number, just cover it up fuly with white or black gaffa tape? Its not expensive to keep replacing your numbers, if I could not afford to remove / replace 2-digit numbers15 times per year I would take up a different sport.

Just back from two days of sprinting, didn't see a single car leave the venue with it's number on. Perhaps R8steve will tell us what he actually does with his car.

A hot air gun (aka paint stripper) softens the adhesive, makes removal easy.
Ordinary polish to remove residue.

I had problems with my car a couple of years back at a sprint, sorted the problem and took it out onto the adjoining road to drive it up and down, not speeding, just to check it was OK, when I drove back into the paddock there was the Clerk of the Course and a scrutineer waiting to 'have a word with me' about taking it on the road with race numbers.

So yes it is legal but could get you in bother with MSA, and the cost and inconvenience of removing/replacing numbers is minimal.
