So I'm looking to do only 1 sprint a year so require among other things FIA approved overalls now as my plans are so infrequent I was looking to keep costs to a minimum.

But it would appear I'm looking at around £300+ For an FIA 8856 2000 or FIA 1986 standard overall. Is this right? And any recommendations on where to look for a deal?

Suddenly something that was looking to be a good value event once a year does not look so appealing.

It really is a case of shopping around.

And dont forget license, helmet, gloves, in some classes HANS device etc

You do also get people selling them second hand if really on a budget

You can try PH classified and ebay for s/h but you should satisfy yourself they are genuine and not Chinese copies.

I have a spare set for sale in Size 50 - if you are a diminutive gentlemen of 5' 8" or lower we can talk turkey...

Thank you for the offer, sadly I'm 6'3" which I guess is a 62/64 in sparco sizing.

Keep a eye on the uphillracers for sale section. They crop up on there from time to time.

Bought my overalls off eBay for £100 a while ago. They were brand new, never used and still had the price label on them!

Do they have to be in date for speed events? Or just homologated?

Do they have to be younger than a certain date. Mine have a date of manufacture of 2007, I had something in my head of them having to be replaced after 10 years, due to material fatigue, (Less fire retardant).

Couldn't find anything in my quick scan of the blue book...? Have I made this bit up somewhere over the years...?

So long as they meet the FIA spec in the Blue Book and have no visible rips, holes etc, they are fine. I was wearing a 1999 dated suit up until a few years ago.

Bought a race suit, brand new. Wore once, car was badly damaged, sold all my race wear. Knowing what a bargain it was for the person buying my suit, I kept an eye on ebay and when one came up hardly used, I got a replacement!
