Hans post fitment
Discussion
I'm just back from the Dubai 24 hour where, unknown to me when I signed up, HANS was mandatory. My GP5 was pre-drilled, but the only folk available on-site were Stand 21. The chief scutineer, gave me dispensation to race with Stand 21 supplied/fitted posts and HANS device, but no FIA sticker.
So I'd really like to know what I need to do to make it all pukka. Should I send it to Arai (or their auth HANS fitter) for new posts/sticker or just continue to use as is and explain if/when asked?

I have a three year old Bell that has Hans posts and no sticker, never been turned away from scrutineering.
I took a look at them from the inside and there is nothing to them, just a little bolt and plate, if we are responsible for spannering our own cars, I find it odd that we can't be trusted with something as simple as this?

Totally agree with you. Why can I fit rose-joints, the clutch, the wheels, do my tyre pressures, bolt the engine in, fit wishbones, fit dampers, set wings, repair carbon, bolt in my seat-belts, put my seatbelts on, bleed my brakes, check the brake pads, bolt in the pedals and even the brake push-rods...
...but I am not allowed to tighten up two poxy nuts holding the HANS posts to my helmet. I think this is called a cartel. Jobs for the boys. A total stitch up.
I feel better now!

figure 9.
But then this is a 2007 document - has it been subsequently updated?
Yesterday, I spoke to Andrew at Stand 21 - he was most helpful.
It seems the regulations are a bit unclear as to who can/cannot fit posts that are then validated by the FIA sticker.
He recommended that I send the helmet back to the manufacturer to have them validate the installation (which was done by a qualified HANS installer!) but that this may cost me just as much as having new posts fitted.
He is going to check just in case things are still changing, but it would appear that if I want to race in Dubai next year, or in any series where HANS is mandatory, then I have no choice.

I came across these fitting guides and given the nigh-on all-embracing requirement to use a FHR from next year, I though they may be useful.
If your helmet is pre SA2010 and pre drilled - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQDpIAHn7hs
Not drilled - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_2C8wyCatE
If your helmet is SA2010 it will have threaded inserts already fitted which the posts just screw into.
