PistonHeads is 15!

A decade and a half has flown by since PH was created and here's how we're celebrating

Now to avoid any confusion, we know that 1998-2014 is 16 years. But with PH being formed at the very end of December 1998, a year of (slightly inaccurate) 15th anniversary celebrations seemed far more appropriate than a few days of strictly correct partying with everyone occupied by Christmas. You know where comments can be added to air your view...

Still looks great today. And here's a 156
Still looks great today. And here's a 156
1998 was a big year in the motoring world, along with the creation of PistonHeads, we also saw the launch of the Peugeot 306 Rallye, Audi TT, BMW Z3 M Roadster and the Subaru Impreza 22B amongst others.

The Alfa Romeo 156 was awarded European Car of the Year and here is the TV advert for it. 1998 was also the year that Google was created so that's two internet giants founded in one year. The UK managed to secure second place in the Eurovision Song Contest too, and everyone remembers the song? If not, check out 'Where are you?' by Imaani here.

A lot has happened since 1998 (or MCMXCVIII as the Romans would say); it was nine years before the first iPhone was released and, in fact, that year we were introduced to the game Snake on the Nokia 5110 (how times have changed eh?). It was eight years before Twitter was launched and six years before Facebook was founded.

We have created some brilliant PH birthday related goodies for you too. A couple of the designs are below but the full range can be seen here.

PH is also having a little birthday shindig to mark this momentous occasion. Full details on the 15th birthday party here.

Any screen shots of the first ever PH page(s)? Always makes me laugh when you get a BBC link back in time and see how much things have moved on

Them were the days. You can still find some early pages on the web way back archive.

P.s. member ID 56 is petty impressive. Makes my #139 look positively recent :-) I wonder what proportion of the first couple of hundred members had a TVR at that point?

Couldn't resist looking this up:

Ah, the days when Steve Barber writing off the original BAD 5H1T Cerbie were front page news! Just incredible the progress and growth that PH has achieved, as others have fallen by the wayside.

Never noticed I was no56!
I remember meeting Dave 'in field' at Donny putting a PH flyer behind the wiper of my S2 when he was drumming up interest in his 'new' site. Think most of us were Tiv owners back then.

A few house moves and a few beers since then so can't help on either count. I know my work colleague joined a week later than me and his ID is 1000 higher than mine - think the site went viral quite quickly thumbup

So how do you find your membership number? - I am a newbie, just coming up to my eleventh birthday. It would be quite cool to have some PH polo shirts bearing our number, much like the England rugby shirts. We could then give due respect to the senior citizens - including those who have posted on this thread.

Wow, I joined when I was fifteen. I had just discovered TVRs and Rufs in Gran Turismo 2, and the high school computers had no internet restrictions... biggrin

Here's to fifteen more! beer

Click on a username to go to their profile (or simply hover over the link).

Look in the URL for the profile for the 'memberId' field: that is your membership number.

For example, in your case you are number 23,741:

I'll put the missing 5 years down to never having a TVR despite looking at them at the TVR Barnet showroom, I went the Lotus then Porsche route (with a Caterham on the side)! biggrin

I know we've spoken about it before, but I always find it interesting. I seem to recall the first 10 or so user ids were tests (even Ted was 12 or something like that?!!), so you guys really were up there with the earliest!!
