I'm not sure this is still a wise choice of gearbox for an Ultima build but I thought this corner of PH's has the most knowledge so would be the best place to ask.

Could someone give me a realistic value for a Porsche G50/52 with LSD gearbox which is in very good condition. It would be as a private sale and possible to inpect with diff out and rear casing removed.

Other builders will hate me but if it is in genuine, good condition with clutch you are looking at between £4k and £5k.

Mine cost me the upper end with CMS side-plate and LSD.

But the bottom line is its worth what both parties agree.. There are recent cases where good examples of the 52 LSD have been sold at 10% of the figures mentioned !

Most newby builders will be expecting to spend 1500-3000 on their transaxle.

Some have spent £10k or more on new or specialist prepared units.

£4K+ seems very hopeful if it's a stock part, without any internal upgrade work, for an Ultima build. These days you can buy a 6-speed 996 turbo (G96/50) gearbox for under 3K. If you want top money for it, I'd suggest such a 'box is of more value to a Porsche owner needing to replace a broken unit.

cannot agree, only few will have lucky shots and get a transaxle at 1500 pounds. I have been buying quite a few g50, turbo gearboxes in the last years and fewer get available. G50/52 are a rare thing and if you get one for 4k or 5k then take it. You will save quite some money on the accessories if you go for a G50 these are much cheaper than installing a cable shift box. I will put a 997 turbo box in my current built and the the accessories have cost me more than the box itself !
Check out my earlier posts for the mechanic lever at the back of the G50, works very well and is making a cheap package with all the hardware from the factory which is a bolt on kit that saves you a lot of headaches.

I have a Getrag 6 speed box for sale that has been taken apart and inspected by a gear box specialist for very reasonable money if you are interested?

+1
I was thinking of changing the whole box on my car to change to an ATB but I've been looking at options for changing / improving the LSD and the G50/52 appears the most cost effective in the long run,
Turbo box 9"crown wheel = V desirable.
In the end I have opted to change the pre-load on the plate LSD.

All G50/50 and G50/52 boxes have LSD fitted as standard, and one in good working order will sell no problem at £5k. The 50/50 is the rarest, only being made for the 1989 930....... Same ratios and final drive as the 52, but I'm told the 50/50 is stronger, not sure why? Also don't understand why Porsche developed the 50/50 for the last year of the 930, then when they started production of the 964 turbo in 91 they changed to a 52, same ratios etc, both 5 speed...... Maybe the 52 was cheaper to manufacture? Just seems an odd thing to do! Does anyone else know the reason?

Bigger crown wheel? 9" compared to 7.5" Std. Just a guess mind.
ETS 50/52 box 9" crownwheel.

I think they are the same in spec, ring and pinion and all.... Just don't know why they changed the nomenclature? Maybe the cases are different in some way?

I know one of the easiest ways to tell is count the bolts on the side plate, 11 on every none turbo G50, and 12 on the G50/50 and G50/52 turbo boxes

XTrac 383-B Transaxle For Gear ratios see XTRAC Website, but as far as gear ratios goes this gear box is perfect, you can get ANY ratio for the box, all gears are 100% interchangeable so 1st gear can go in place of 6th gear and so on. The back halve of the gear box comes with only 10 nuts removed, you can then change the gears in a few minutes, the gear boxes comes with special tools to hold the gear cluster for this job.

SP 26/28 final drive 9/41, Sachs and Tilton clutches are 7.25” 3 disc carbon fiber
1st : 12/48, 2nd : 14/37, 3rd : 16 / 31, 4rd : 21/32 , 5th : 22/28 , 6th : 26/28 Final drive 9 /41

the 996 and 997 transaxles have terrible ratios for the big torquey LS engines..

the G50 52 is the best with its longer 5th and is the strongest available. I think 4k as a starting price to be honest...

a lot of people spend a fortune on the build of their car then fit a box with crap ratios and it spoils the car imo.

there is definately a need for a transaxle with nice long gears, i know of a couple of companies developing such a thing.

Ive just put a LS1 in a front engine sevenesque car and it has a T56 fitted to it running through a 4.1 rear diff, it will cruise at 80 mph at 2000rpm and this is exactly what a Ultima or any midengine monster requires.

those 996 and 997 boxes are expensive to fit with expensive starters, clutches, cable systems, flywheels etc

the Ricardo transaxle is a great way to go and i indeed planned to fit one but i ran out of money... $800 for a starter motor!!!!

Yep we need a nice trans that bolts straight to the LS and uses the LS clutch, flywheel and starter imo, if your lucky those parts come with a crate engine, win win...

Thanks for your help and for the offers of a gearbox.

The reason I asked here was it seems a popular choice as its such a strong box. I've never seen one for sale on any of the UK Porsche forums so wasn't sure what it was worth.

I've got one I'm thinking of selling in very good condition but didn't want to under sell it or ask a stupid price.

I think I already have a buyer lined up who wants to use it in a 700bhp Porsche 935 project but if anyone here is interested please let me know as he is also thinking of going with more race orientated gearbox.

I read on the Factory Five Racing site that Mendeola has developed a transaxle to bolt up to GM LS engines and uses standard LS flywheels, clutches and starters. I don't know the part number or what it costs though. I am guessing that it is available at this time?

996/7 C2 transmissions are IMO too low geared for an Ultima, but the twin turbo boxes have longer ratios, so are much more suited to a torquey motor. I prefer the slicker shift action of the newer cable box over the rod mechanism, but that's very personal.

Disagree with comments that a G96/50 is more expensive to fit, my full setup cost less than a standard G50, let alone a 52 version.

The T56 is an interesting transmission, ratio are strange tho'.... 1st is nice, 2nd & 3rd are the same as the G96/50, then there's a big 2000rpm drop to 4th 1000rpm to 5th and then 2,200rpm to 6th. Very peculiar ratios and I'm pretty sure that most kit cars won't need to be geared to to 265mph!

That X-Trac is pretty, but with transmissions like these, I always feel they're a bit too brutal on the road. Great for a track car tho'.

obviously it wont be doing 265 mph but it will cruise quietly and economically on the motorway unlike your G96 Ultima!! 1st to 4th will only be used on the track then a nice cruise home in 5th 6 th.
