hello everyone..
i read many of the topics about fitting a audi v8 in a ultima.which was helpful .. but need to know which gearbox would fit ..

since i am almost finished in building the ultima. which i bought without engine and gear.

but i have desided to try the audi engine which seems cheaper and easier?
anyhow my doubt is concerning the gearbox, most v8 comes standard with automatic 4x4(quattro) transmission.
if possible to fit the quattro gearbox in length, would it be possible to use only the front axle and block the rear axle.
any advice about the gearbox would be very appreciated.

best reg.

hey thanks for the illustration
so as i can see rear space is needed to fit the quattro.
which is the big question ... is there another way to shorten the quattro box as on this pic.
http://rejsa.nu/forum/viewtopic.php?t=44152&po...

nevertheless can i ask you what the total meassure lenght on yours with gear.

To PM someone click on that persons name in the left column. This will take you to their profile.
When there click on 'email me' in the top right corner.

This will send a message to that members email. Once they reply you can then mail and add atachments in the normal mail fashion.

Before you go too far down the Audi engine/box route, where are you with the build? The Ultima is designed around the Chevy V8/LS range of engines and although you may think the Audi route is cheaper, the changes required may prove this is not the case.

I would suggest some real research into the actual installation of the Audi lump in the Ultima before making any commitment. Just because the engines can be picked up cheap does not mean the installation will be problem/cost free.

Good luck.

The Audi combo (we are not talking about an RS4 engine as this is a very difficult engine to use due to it's electronic/mechanical complexity) does add a few advantages and disadvantages.

The engine/gearbox is shorter and enables a mid mounted fuel tank freeing up the side pods for other duties, It is also lighter. However, you will need throttle bodies and aftermarket and your own engine mounts and drive-shafts. You will not make the big power of a Chevy either.

Total weight saving could be 100 kgs but power would be about 450hp. Also, no Factory support for your engine/gearbox issues.

Value when selling could also be affected.

Your choice.

If you stick to an AUDI engine, why not considering a V10?
The install may be as complex or easy as the V8 install, but the result
will be quite unique.
Afaik it was done before by a dutch forum member....

well at first i wanted to make it electrical. but to gain the horsepower from electrical motor is rather expensive .. then secondly i am a jaguar lover. and if i had the choice i would use a v12 5,3 since it got momentum as does chevy.. but gearing seems to be problematic without the use of the g50 box from porsche .

but i am just thinking about the audi..
i am open ears. towards all of you more experienced ultima people which why all advice is good..
i hope to hear some alternatives.

well hell yes v10 would be nice..
but i hope a v8 would do for me..but without a doubt V10 would rock.

Quite an old engine now and relatively rare, also lacks the ponies 320 BHP and about 450 torques IIRC.
An SBC could easily be specced to out perform that, let alone an LS derivative.
Nice sound with the right Zorst though.

BMW v12, nice engine, if you want one, i have a 750i for sale!

If you plan to use a Jaguar engine... i would recommend using the
AJ8 supercharged V8, very compact, not heavy and easily tunable, gives reliable power. I have a XKR as one of my daily drivers.

Actually this engine was on my list too, when i had to decide which one to use for my build. Next on my list was the Porsche 4.5l turbo V8.....
It's up to you......

If you were thinking of the Jag then V8XS make some nice adapter plates, RS4 clutches etc. fitting onto the audi box.

hey rusti
sound like you know much about it... tell more... which gearbox fwd og the quattro?

about the audi v8 with quattrobox.. complications? is it only the engine fit and gear length that is the problem.. would there be any problems running a complete engine as it is out of a audi?

best reg.

O1X gearbox from FWD tdi. Small, light and implausibly cheap. A new one was sourced recently for £1600!! The advantage of using RS4 clutch etc. is that you won't get any mismatches and heavy clutch/starter motor nasties.

Steve Smith in UK has done a few Audi V8/Audi box Ultimas now and they are all good.
