think best thing to do fit the column, you've got to do it either way, try the cheap system, if you're not happy fit the expensive one
for me it's fine, get in and drive it to my limited capabilities, have fun, smile on face, job done thumbup
I agree. I've run a Corsa column for 5 years. The first controller I had was useless, kept cutting out. The second from some Vauxhall tuner in Chesterfield is faultless and was less than £100.

So its basically 1500 quid for the DC better ECU, and 175 quid for there basic controller that talks to the Normal Corsa Mitsubishi ECU. Nice guy on the phone as well, really explained all my choices and said that the normal Corsa Column Units are fine if controlled well, and not to worry about the Torsion bar sensor....

I totally agree!
I will definitely fit the corsa c column, as at that stage of my build (center section still removed) it is very easy to get it in. I feel for those who have to do it with the dash already in.
If i decide not to use it in the end, i can even remove the el. motor so its a simple coulmn with a torsion bar.

Personally we tried both and settled on the 106/Saxo remote pump with a normal ram, just had more feel and the damping effect was nice on sharp hits.

Having said that, Steve up there ^^ doesn't seem to be doing too badly with his! biggrin

If you have a vehicle speed signal then you don't need the controller. It's possible to wire it up without.

That's assuming you want power assistance when you're on the move, which I don't at the moment, primary use will be low speed manoeuvres during parking.

The Citroen Saxo / Pug 106gti unit is actually a normal 12v hydraulic "power pack" made by a Canadian company (HPI http://www.hpicanada.com/ )

It really is a bit at too girly for any serious flow rate (i.e a big volume ram moving at high speed).

Far better is the TRW Gen3 EHPAS unit used by Ford amongst others! (although you need a CAN bus to run it properly (in full speed control mode)

Corsa D is a CAN controlled unit also, shame as it is physically smaller than the B or C.

The TRW gen3 EHPAS unit requires handwheel rate from the SAS (Steering Angle sensor), Engine speed [rpm] and vehicle speed [kph], all from the CAN bus and obviously in a format and accompanied with the necessary CRC's and counters to work. It has an internal calibration for the output speed (and hence flow rate) against those parameters. However, if you just "spoof" engine rpm (and not the other signals), it goes to a limp mode where it runs at full rpm (failsafe in the case of loss of input from the SAS/ABS etc)

Does anyone know what format the Corsa B VSS is in?

Not sure about the Corsa B but I know the Corsa C is a square wave, I can't recall how it related to speed though, I did some checks on a corsa with a scope a long while ago.

can someone remind me what the differences between the corsa b and corsa c column are?
I thought that the corsa c was bigger and wouldnt fit in the ultima??
Corsa C columns seem to be cheaper to buy than the corsa B columns??

Corsa C are longer and the ECU is on the column (so s/h it comes with it more often), also I believe a bit of a 'stronger' motor as the B ones can fail.

C are more common and less desirable hence the far lower price s/h. IIRC the EPAS on the B was only on (some of) the smaller engined cars.

Corsa Column Measurements:
Corsa B:
Max Overall Length 405mm
Max Width fronm Centre 230mm
Weight 7.4Kg
Height Adjustable No
Position of ECU Mounted on chassis

Corsa C:
Max Overall Length 580mm (or 300mm with input shaft removed)
Max Width fronm Centre 220mm
Weight 8.4Kg
Height Adjustable Yes
Position of ECU Mounted on column

Note that the 'B' can be seriously cut down, not sure if the 'C' can be.

Does anyone do a conventional hydraulic power rack for the Ultima? It seems quite bulky to have a massive motor and steering column assy in the cabin?

Has anyone tried these?:

They should save a few kg compared to the EPAS.
