After well over 8 years my Sport started chewing on its starter last week. Have just taken the start out an found this:

I guess my list of winter jobs is starting early this year. Anyone suggest a good source for starter ring gears? (I will try the factory)

Looking at the starter gear

Its a powerlite start, anyone know if it possible to replace the gear?

Looks like its only just been engaging, so I am going to see if I can skim the alloy adaptor back a few mm.

The Factory will have the ring and it is a doddle to replace if you have access to a gas torch.

I am sure it is possible to get the gear for the starter but it may be a good idea to get the starter refreshed. It does look like you have the wrong starter though. You should get more engagement than that.

Have a word with Richard as they may be able to offer one with better engagement.

Ring gear and starter pinion should be available from the Factory.
I also had to skim to get a better engagement. I was unable to find a different starter with a longer pinion.

Would it be possible to mount a new pinion with 180° rotation?
It seems that the teeth would start at the beginning of the shaft and you would have a full engagement.

From the first photo it would seem you have a hybrid set up (aren't they all?), there is a hole cast for a bushing (clearly visible in the photo to the right of the ring gear) this is for a long nose starter, which you do not have (Powerlight don't make them) having said that your ring gear looks (to me) further back (towards the rear of the car) than "normal".
I'd get the factories opinion on this, they should be able to tell if a long nose starter will fit or not.

Just been through this job and bought a new pinion, new starter (long story) and ring gear from the factory. Having done a bit of investigation - the factory is the way to go for the parts as there are a load of variables with ring/starter combinations so save your yourself time IMHO.
