I have a splitter on the car made of 7 ply Baltic maple plywood. This is the stuff that they make drawers out of and it is very strong stuff. The original piece was just painted a nice gloss black. After 4 years the bottom got a bit chewed up, so I replaced it with another piece of ply only covered with a carbon layer. To me this is the most cost effective way to build one, because you will chew it up over time. I think Southern California has some of the easiest ramps in and out of parking lots ect. I credit this to our lack of rain so we don't worry about water flow as much as say northern ca. I would not bend the splitter down I think you will have plenty to content with as far as scrapping it goes. Good luck, Lee

As Lee says you should regard it as sacrificial so IMO carbon is not the ideal choice. Plywood will do the best job. If you spray it with black stonechip paint you can give it a quick squirt now and again to hide the scars.

Keep it level. It functions by splitting the air above and below so an angle will not make any difference in that.

The longer you make it (up to a point) the better it will function but the main issue is you will reduce the amount you can open the clip. The splitter is only secured to a lip of GF on the bottom of the clip so the longer you make it the greater the leverage to rip it off. The SS clip design has the splitter fixed in position with the clip lifting and opening above it. This allows for the splitter to be much more securely mounted direct to the chassis.

If your planning on doing European trips then consider the clearance on and off ferries and Euro tunnel. I believe a few have had problems. Please share your experiences here about that as I may do an European Tour next year. I have a carbon mods carbon foam sandwich splitter. Very nice and stiff material, until you ding it on a curve then its internal foam stiffness has gone frown However scraping on marginal ground clearance on slopes was ok. Mine sweeps back to the front wheels and has a support inside the clip for it. I just live with the fact that I can't open the front clip as much, does not bother me.

I use Eurotunnel and always go in the bus/high vehicle section and have no problems.

Problems only come when you try to get the car into house parking as the slope up/down can be a bit steep or abrupt.
