I am in the process of designing my dash layout and was thinking of maybe using this switch for the lights and horn...

Can anyone see any obvious problems with using the same switch for the wipers and screen wash? I will of course change the icons to represent wipers and screen wash.

Depending what driving experience you are looking for I would seriously consider adding stalks to cover lights, (including high beam and flash) wipers, washers, horn and hazards.
I bought a second hand car and will be retro fitting stalks this winter.

I have considered stalks and even bought a set of used ford escort ones. However, they feel a little flimsy and I also do not want to extend the steering column. I have designed my own version of the atom dash in autocad and plan to have it 3d printed.

Similar to this...http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6oa1-aBm4XA

I still need to finalise the switch layout and styles. The switch mentioned above isn't the must cosmetically pleasing but it's a damn site nicer than the factory Morris marina switches.

I will be using the gtr for both road and track, but wanted to go for a more race car look and feel.

My Ultima build has stalks and it works out perfectly (I did not do the build; I am acknowledging the design and build skill of the original owner). Remarkably, after a lot of measuring and analysis, he ended up using the stalks and steering shaft housing cover from... a Chrysler PT Cruiser. Since he was a very exacting builder, he must have had a good reason to do it, and it works quite well. I never had a chance to discuss the reasoning behind his choice.
He did end up implementing a very complex collection of relays and fuses on a panel he selected. Apparently took a long time to get it figured out - including sequencing rear tail lights like the Mustang does it. I suspect that the more recent programmable central wiring control units for builds like the Ultima (I see them often in Cobra builds) were unavailable at the time.
Pics if you are interested.

Have you thought of using buttons on your steering wheel? There is an interesting solution available...

I would be interested to see the PT setup so any pics would be appreciated.

I have looked at the steering buttons available but prefer the look of the Atom setup. I like the idea of a single unit that houses all my switches and digital dash. Maybe I could just incorporate a simple indicator switch as that's the most used of the stalks.

Once built and used for a while I can tweak the design and just get another version printed.

Do you have any references for a steering wheel button plate with relay box which is not wireless?

I don't plan to have a quick release mechanism on my steering wheel, then a cable between the dashboard and the wheel is ok. The buttons on the steering wheels definitely look the best for the Ultima comparing to stalks or the factory switches.

Would the buttons on the steering wheel get through iva ok? Also would there be any issues with wireless controls during iva?

Also, how many buttons do you need on the wheel? I don't tend to use any of the stalk functions when going around corners except maybe cancelling the indicator.

I have the Cartek unit coupled to a device that lets a momentary push on either indicator button flash indicator for lane changing and cancel, hold for 1 second and they flash for 30 flashes, push and hold brake (i.e. at junctions) will flash indefinitely until about ten flashes after brake is released.
Once you are used to them they are ok, the potential issue with Cartek unit is it is driven by an IR emitter and you need to position your receiving sensor carefully to avoid loss of Line of site,
I believe I have a solution whereby two receivers can be connected in tandem and so avoid that problem.
Cartek unit has eight channels and all buttons can be individually programmed to be momentary or latching.
I wouldn't think for a moment it would muster IVA approval.
I have had the unit three years and have never changed the sender unit battery(on steering wheel).

Summit claims to have an IVA friendly version, which has the advantage of being a one stop solution.
Summit one is radio control, I think it has eight channels four latching four momentary, happy to be put right though.

Both of those units look good and would be ideal if it wasn't for the cost. I am hoping to build a complete unit including a cowl, ready to take a Dash 2 for less than £100. This would house all my switches, Dash 2 and would not require the steering column to be lengthened. My proposed unit would also work with the existing factory wiring.

I'll give it a go and if all fails one of these units will do the trick!

Finally found time to complete the design of my dash using google sketchup. The 3d print is also now complete.

I just need to polish/paint before fitting Dash 2 and switches.
