Has anybody considered a second, supplementary speedo (in addition to the main factory unit) in driver 'line of site'?

I don't want to tear my dash to pieces BUT have found that checking my speed whilst 'making progress' is somewhat perilous. Frankly I'm too busy controlling potential involuntary bowel movements under hard acceleration to spend vital seconds studying the centrally mounted speedo. Queue pending speeding fines......

I'm looking at a GPS model (small, accuracy and ease of installation) - something like this one:

http://www.digital-speedos.co.uk/ds200-gps-speedom...

This is small enough to mount on the top of the dash (above the three lights on the vertical surface) and could be viewed through the top of the steering wheel.

Thats the trouble when you get old - you have no sense of speed or control of your bowel movements - no need to worry when following the Smart - you'll be within the legal limit ....... laugh

Bit Fugly, might as well use a SatNav.

I'm with you 'fugly'.

The one I URL'd above is double the cost of the fugly one but it's the least offensive IMHO.

As Dom said I have the Demon Tweeks one as a temporary fix whilst I install a Dash 2, but it needs recharging after a few hours use and I sometimes forget to switch it off. The wired in one you are proposing is the better more permanent option, you just have to find a route for the power cable. I agree with you about the central speedo being unreadable especially with the small graduation marks. The Dash 2 will be in the line of sight behind the steering wheel. I will also be fitting a set of stalks so I can concentrate on my driving.

So Nabbott - bite the bullet and go Dash2 - I know someone who can help with the installsmash

Apply the two second rule.

Full throttle in any gear will see you breaking one or more speed limits.

If you drive the car enough you will have a rough idea if you are going too fast.

Being a biker I'm pretty dialed into to when I'm speeding - it's those margin calls when you're driving through suburban areas I'm most concerned with. What's prompted this is that I think I just got gunned (in my everyday car) at just over 30mph (still waiting for the ticket) and it made me realise that, had I been in the ultima, the speedo could have been telling me I was doing "somewhere between 28-38mph". Then you start thinking about the poor ergonomics of a centrally mounted speedo in a performance car. I'm a fan of the dash 2 set up but I don't have the time or inclination to tear out, re-wire then reupholster the dash.

Only 199mph? Well that completely rules it out for pretty much every journey then smile

I don't agree. The central speedo is in ones peripheral vision, it takes very little eye movement to read what speed one is doing, whereas a distinct glance down is required to read a speedo behind the wheel.

I don't agree GTRMikie. The small increments on the speedo and the extra distance to the recessed position of the speedo make it extremely hard to read especially when you are either driving at speed or at low speed past speed cameras.
I have a GPS digital speedo behind the steering wheel and find this very easy to read. Although the speedo and rev counter look aesthetically pleasing they don't lend themselves to function. I suppose that if you hardly do any miles in the car then this isn't going to matter but for those who like to use their cars this is very important point.

I with you Roj! Just need to divert some (more) funds and time away from the full wallet cleansing experience that is 'moving house' frown

Racing Roj, I was purely commenting on the position of the speedo, not the accuracy of the instrument. Obviously a digital speedo is much easier to read accurately "at speed" wherever it is positioned.

agreed hahahaha but when your car is geared to 230 mph it would be nice to know its doing more the 199mph when you really really want to know how fast it will go.

i would like to do over 200 mph next year :0)
