My Ultima driving year came to an end about 2 months ago when a metallic rubbing noise made itself evident. On investigation I found vertical movement in the passenger side shaft from the transmission.

So gearbox out. Bit of hunting around and advice from Graham (thanks) and a trip to Macclesfield and then the wait for some news once it was opened.

That news arrived today. Bugger!

I had asked for a complete refresh, thinking that a 23 year old G50/52 would benefit from it and convinced myself "how dear could it be" as very little was wrong.

I hadn't factored in Porsche prices and my "little issue".

£7200 approx. with VAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not the labour but nearly £5k + VAT on parts.

So no refresh of the gearbox but the differential is shot. The bearings have spun (the metallic noise) and "can be thrown on from the other side of the room" rather than pressed on.

£1800 + VAT for a genuine Porsche dif. Ouch!

A mate suggested replacing the genuine Porsche with a Quaife so that is what I am looking at.

I had the 'I can get another box for less' thought but of course it doesn't end there. Other parts may have to be changed if it is not a G50/52 and you don't know the state of the fresh box.

So the moral to this story is...........repairing a Porsche box is veeeeeeerrrrry expensive. Make sure you buy a good one!

Paul

BTW. I thought mine was a good one.

Paul: I had CMS install a Quaife in my G50-03 box when I had it gone through when I built the car in 07. I have appox 25,000 miles on the box now behind a 565hp LS and have had excellent service from the combination. The most impressive feature of this combination is the control of the car under hard throttle. Even if I get stupid with the skinny pedal on the right, the tires break loose evenly, the car has never yawed under hard acceleration. So I for one would support your option of using a Quafie, I don't think you will be disappointed. Lee

Thanks for that Lee. Good to hear positive comments about what will probably be my cheapest option.

I fitted a quaife diff to my G50 for less than 1k all in. Its not a difficult job tbh. Shimming and backlash etc are the main issues its fairly straightforward other than that. Bad luck in the rest of the parts cost tho, ouch!

The Porsche Diff might be expensive but I find the feedback on trailing throttle quite reassuring, If the Quaife is an ATB that feed back is all but lost (to me anyway), it sort of feels like the rear end is coasting on trailing throttle.
If you can try a car out with an ATB fitted before you choose.
I had the pre-load adjusted on my diff to suit the mid engine lay out and I'm really pleased with the result.

Sounds familiar. Ours cost over £3k when we just had to replace the 3rd and 4th gears. Makes a proper gearbox seem like a good investment all of a sudden!

Whey you get some good useable s/h examples of your box for sale for Porsche G50/52 money please shout out Jonny.

I should be able to get a new Quaife fitted and box back for about £3K.

About the cost of an oil change on a Lambo.........

Will do! But when faced with a large bill it does make you think. I had one guy come to me telling me he paid 14k for a Porsche G96-50 that had been heavily upgraded - and it had, but for that money it should have been.

What Quaife box are you going for? I thought all their boxes struggled to cope with the GM torque...

It's just the Quaife ATB differential I may be having fitted in the place of the Porsche LSD.

The gearbox will remain the G50/52.
