I would be lost without my 4 post lift. It is not ideal for every job but it cost me £500 delivered.
Came from my tyre dealers when they moved and had new equipment.
The top garages are going for flat floor two post lifts where the whole lift is buried in the floor until needed. Vvvvvery expensive though.
I would say a lift of some form is an essential for any very keen vehicle 'tamperer'.

Did a bit of research into these a few weeks back (I too am planning a new garage). The good ones will raise the car 1.8m which means you can get completely under the car. Around £2.5k should get a good one.
Less than that and they are either limited lift (read limited use in my book) or run directly on the floor (no good unless your floor is flat and hard as a billiard table). Having done a LOAD of work on my car this year sorting through the issues I'd have been completely boned without my pit. Unfortunately I think pits in new builds are a no-no so have decided on a scissor lift instead of a two/four post ramp as these take up too much space when not in use.

Roof height might be a factor.
When I have my Discovery on the lift it gets quite close to the roof which is about 14ft high.
Weight might also be an issue. Mine is on it's recommended limit with my 3 tonne Discovery.
My project Thor will also be getting close to that weight too.
You may have a light Ultima now but you never know what the next project is.
You will also find you have more 'friends' when they find out you have one!!!

I would love a pillar lift but the workshop and garage (under the house) don't have sufficient height. Perhaps OK for lifting a Can-Am, but a regular vehicle will be touching the ceiling very quickly. Perhaps I should get some floor to ceiling measurements done before speculation any further...

Small scissor lift and a pit would sort that!I found a 2nd hand one of these on ebay.

The spacing is not quite right for the ultima, I will modify it to make is slightly narrower when I get some time (which should be fairly easy), so for now I have coach bolted some scaffold planks between the pads.
Tilts and gives plenty of access to the rear. Folds flat an stores at the back of the garage nicely without taking too much space up.

I've been looking round for a good 2 post lift recently for use in my garage with restricted height 2.7m.
A product that I am probably going for is a Maxjax, will be about £1700 and available in the new year after it gets safety certification for sale in the EU.
Unless you have space it's always going to be a compromise. Certainly on the Lotus forum, and others a 2 post offers the most flexibility and seems to be the most popular.
If I take the plunge I'll "post" some pics.

we have 4 x 2 posters we have replaced with scissor lifts and mine wont fit on any of them easily.
either car too low and arms wont go underneath, if you drive car onto long planks the arms hit the planks, or arms themselves hit the bodywork as chassis tucked away from bodywork. the only way it fitted was 4 of these

it might be best you see if car goes on before buying and fitting the 2 poster to find its hassle, after all how often does it need to go in the air?
the ultimas best car ramp is a sunken 4 poster or sunken scissor lift

Take your point, the minimum height of the lifting pads is 89mm so with a ride height of ~120mm thought it would be ok, but yeah I can see locating the pads could be problematic. Seen a gt40 on one of these lifts although I must say I didn't see it being put there.
Anyway as it happens I would be using it for work on my Elan S4, great for when I need to remove the body or anything else for that matter, or any other project I may start.

I have owned a Max Jack lift for several years now (purchased for under $2,000 dollars) when they first came out. I assure you the car will fit under the lift with out a problem. It can be used in a 8 foot celling garage, Only problem is it only lifts to about 4 feet so you work under the car on your knees. Anyone who can afford to build one of these car is crazy not to purchase one of these lifts. Using a doll is just silly. As for the location on the pads -- I placed the car and drew marks on the floor for the tires then the jack arms so I don't have to look under the car to lift it.
