I was planning on mounting buttons to control my Dash 2 on the steering wheel. Any ideas on cable routing would be much appreciated - as I can't see a way of doing this without the cable getting tangled around the steering column when turning to full lock.

I've seen the wireless kits, and would like to see if there is a wired solution first.

Many thanks.

I used a coiled cable on a Radical with a removable steering wheel and an RS Components connector on the dash. Worked well and looked ok.

Thanks Racing Roj - did you just allow the coiled cable to wrap itself around the steering column then (which I think must be the only without some sort of two part connector)?

There is a whole bunch of them actually, 8 pin 12 pin as well as several vendors making them, this is a bit more "professional" one.

Pedders - if you're fitting column stalks, put the buttons under the shroud. Then they're out of sight and within finger reach wink The other thing you could do is put them in the binnacle next to the dash unit itself.

No I didn't wrap it round the column but you could do if there is enough room. I don't think that would work if you have the crush part fitted though. The cable was short enough to hold itself up but because it was coiled you could remove the steering wheel and put it on the top of the cockpit and if necessary unplug it from the dash. The connector I used was a very fine one about 10mm across from RS Components. The soldering was a fiddly as the pins were so small. Would it be possible to route the cables through the steering column?

Various people sell steering wheel quick release bosses with "Lemo" connectors integrated into the middle of the hollow shaft. Works well, but Lemo connectors are expensive.

I am fitting a Dash 2 in the coming months and will definitely go with the Max Torque option for the buttons. You definitely need them on the steering wheel for ease of use.

Another option is a button kit that has a standard bolt pattern and a RF transmitter. I have a Momo wheel with a horn button and this button kit add on used for left and right turn signal. The buttons connect to a small RF transmitter that has 4 channels and fits behind the horn button. I am using 3 of the 4 channels. The RF kit has a receiver under the dashboard. The transmitter is powered by a 2032 battery. The battery lasted from 2005 to 2014 before I had to change it. I'll see if I can find the RF unit brand name and the quick release unit used as the quick release unit had enough room in it for the transmitter.

Many thanks for the responses all. I'm going to stick with the steering wheel mounted buttons (pic of little plate to hold the buttons I have made from some scrap carbon fibre sheet attached) and route the cable through the steering column - it's possible to drill a hole in the centre of the steering wheel boss mounting face, and then another hole further down the column (which is a tube).

The plan is to use a curly cable to connect the wires running through the column to the Dash 2 wires, with this being sufficiently long so as not to restrict the column as it is turned from lock to lock - fingers crossed this will be ok.

I'm waiting for an extended column from the factory, so have had opportunity to do a test drill on the standard length one I bought before deciding on the stalks.

Obviously very conscious about the size of hole, but it doesn seem to have taken any noticeable strength out of the column.

Not sure about the multi coloured buttons at the moment - looking a bit like smarties...
