Got the first part of my build today! THE TRANSMISSION - yeah, not really needed at this stage, but I found one at a good price and decided to pick it up and store it till it would be... Its from a 2006 997 C2... I have 2 days to check it over before the 'no more refund' policy applies...

Questions about the trans:
1) It has silicon sealing at all the joints (looks red in the attached pictures)... is that something to worry about? The seller does not know if the trans was taken apart/rebuilt... All the bolts have blue torque marks, but the trans joints show red sealant...

2) I can move the large lever, but am unable to move the small lever (1/2, 3/4, 5/6) by hand... my mechanic looked at it and said he was able to move it with a mole grip, but should I be worried if I cannot move it by hand? My mechanic said all gear are present...

Assuming the box is good to keep, I want to clean and paint it... What all should I take care about when pressure washing or painting the box? What parts need to be covered up/not painted? Any recommended primer/paint (wheel paint good, or something else)? Any risk of getting water into the box while pressure washing?

Thanks!!

It is very clear that's been taken apart.
The previous owner (unless he bought it in it's present state) knows it has been apart, or at least suspects so(the paint on the bolt heads look too fresh to my eye) I'd suggest he's knocked it on realising it has (may have) a problem.
Doesn't appear to have any OEM gasket though difficult to see with those pictures (though may not have been fitted Std. from Aisin Ai).
It's also the lowest geared 178mph@7000rpm of all the (Porsche) boxes available and it will detract enjoyment from any long distance run.
It may also be worth noting the Aisin boxes are known to be a difficult box to split.
A bit late now but I'd have run a mile from that. frown

ETS PS I am a born cynic so don't take it to heart wink

There is no way that a transmission would be fitted to a new Porsche with such a mess of sealant.
As said above, it is not ideal for an Ultima either.

Get your money back. It rings too many alarm bells and is not ideal.

I am not professing to be an expert here - I bought my G50/20 directly from the factory and perhaps paid a premium in doing so.

However I have heard that the costs associated with rebuilding a poor box can be very high indeed - parts in particular being expensive.

Unless the price is set at a level where you can afford to scrap it, it seems to me that you are taking on an unknown risk buying an unopened metal box with no way really of knowing what is inside.

As noted above it does look like someone has (fairly recently by the look of that sealant) taken it apart and decided to sell it. Are they able to give any assurance at all as to why it was dismantled, what they found etc.

As I say I am not a transmission expert, just my thoughts. Good luck either way!

Don't just consider the advice..... TAKE IT.

The seller has simply gone round the box with a torque-pen... He hasn't even bothered to wipe the casing clean !!

You buy cheap....you buy twice.

Please post back on Monday to confirm that you have returned this piece of scrap and got your money back.

Returned this morning... Will continue to look for a box locally (or might end up ordering from the factory at the end when the time comes if I don't find anything)...

Good decision.

A full rebuild of my G50/52 with all new bearings, shims, seals, etc. and new ATB diff was going to be over £7k. That was without any shafts or gears if they were needed.

The rest of the car will be new or refurbished so make sure the transmission you use is as good as you can get.
