I have a question about the advance on the ignition for a 383 SBC Amerspeed 535hp.
What kind of degrees btdc are needed ?

My setting has loosened up during a trackday and I can't recall the exact figures.

If you have a SBC and need carbs, ignition or engine sorted Charles Dunn is the man to go too.

Spooky... Having been a bit quiet on here having re-ringed the engine, stopped it burning oil, and almost sorting the carb jetting out, I was going to ask the same question! I have the original dyno sheet from AmerSpeed and iirc it has the timing spec on there....?

Double spooky, Im just setting up my engine having installed a new cam and inspection....
Although Im in scotland so will either need to do it myself. Unless anyone knows an SBC expert a good bit further north?

Thanks fo all the info.
Mine is set now at 43° btdc. The car is track only so I'll take it there one off the coming weeks with a specialised
mechanic to see how the engine reacts under load.

Confusion Hunter - I am near Newcastle Upon Tyne, and haven't found any SBC (or Carb!) experts round here yet, so I have been relying on Google and a lot of trial and error. I am now a dab hand at a swapping out various jets on a Holley...

Are there any proper rolling roads near you?

Hiya, there are a few dotted around 50 mile radius, but I also happen to have a wide band lambda in the car and a G meter..... Ive just fitted a new cam and fuel pumps so will do my best to get it as close as i can, ..... it might be fun....??? laugh Happy to accept advice and pointers of course!

Wide band is what I have been using, and yes, it is fun, but time consuming and you have to be patient....

Have you had the engine running since rebuild? (You have broken in the cam properly?)

Have you rebuilt it yourself- I only ask as I had a nightmare sealing the inlet manifold properly and had an internal oil leak- oil was getting sucked into the I take from the lifter valley. Not good for oil consumption or tuning with a wide band!

If you have a Holley carb, there are some good links I can point you in the direction of. There are a lot of people who talk bks out there on tuning too, so choose your sources carefully.

Might be worth starting a new topic rather than hijacking this one!
